Position: HSE Coordinator I

Safety Specialist

Essential Functions

  • Ensure that all HPSI safety procedures, rules and regulations are communicated, understood, and followed.
  • Conduct formal and informal inspections of shipyard work sites to monitor compliance with safety standards, identify hazards, and document findings.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and employees to develop practical solutions for safety and environmental concerns.
  • Assist production teams in establishing and maintaining proper lighting and ventilation.
  • Perform daily housekeeping inspections of shops, docks, and vessels under construction.
  • Test and certify confined spaces prior to entry and throughout shifts to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Issue Hot Work Permits as required.
  • Perform the duties of a Shipyard Competent Person (training provided).
  • Serve as a member of the Shipyard Emergency Response Team (ERT), responding to medical emergencies, chemical spills, and other incidents. Must meet the physical requirements of the role, including respirator/SCBA use and confined space entry.
  • May assist in the company's Hazardous Waste Management program (training and certification provided).
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

Competencies

  • Practical knowledge of health, safety, and environmental practices in an industrial or construction setting.
  • Ability to recognize and resolve hazards and problem situations effectively.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently and manage assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Work Environment

Work is performed in an active shipyard environment including shipboard, fabrication shops, and outdoor work areas with uneven terrain. Exposure to noise, heat, cold, vibration, dust, fumes, smoke, and inclement weather is typical of heavy industrial settings. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and mobility to navigate worksites is required. Hanwha Philly Shipyard is a TOBACCO-FREE facility.

Physical Demands

The physical demands outlined below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While the role is not directly involved in production, the successful candidate must possess the physical capabilities necessary to work safely in an industrial environment. These include sufficient range of motion for lifting, carrying, bending, climbing, working at heights, entering confined spaces, and extended periods of walking or standing.

The position also requires the ability to be medically cleared to wear a respirator or SCBA; in accordance with OSHA regulations, employees must remain clean-shaven where respirator seals contact the face. Employment in this position is contingent upon passing a medical examination. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, on-site, safety-sensitive position. Work schedules are determined by departmental needs and may vary, including rotation between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts, as well as weekends and holidays to meet production demands. The role is field-based and requires a consistent presence in the production areas throughout each shift.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in a Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE)–related field OR 1–2 years of equivalent practical safety experience
  • Minimum 1 - 2 years' experience in Shipyards, construction or closely related industry preferred
  • Experience as an emergency services responder a plus, but not required
