Clinical Nurse - Gateway To The Operating Room @ HUP
The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is currently seeking a full time Clinical Nurse in the Operating Room. Both new to practice and experienced nurses may be considered for the Gateway to the OR program. Starting July 20th, 2026.
The Gateway to the OR Program serves as a 6-month orientation to build competent and successful Perioperative Nurses by using basic didactic education that offers the rationale and theory required to provide safe perioperative patient care. The comprehensive curriculum is designed to provide a more efficient and consistent education to improve the development of new-to-practice nurses and nurses with limited OR experience.
During this program, nurses learn the fundamental principles of operating room nursing through both formalized classroom instruction and clinical experience with a preceptor. At the completion of the program, nurses become key members of the operating room team at one of the most respected hospitals in the country.
The program consists of 5 weeks of classroom and skills lab instruction and 12 to 16 weeks of structured clinical experiences in each of the 12 specialty areas. Through lecture, discussion, self-learning modules and clinical experience, nurses develop core competencies in:
- Pre-operative assessments
- Basic operating room case prep skills
- Creation and maintenance of sterile fields
- Intra-operative documentation
- Intra-operative scrub and circulating duties
- Correct processing of specimens
- Positioning of patients and equipment
- Safe care and handling of surgical instruments
The Clinical Nurse 2 Colleague is an RN that practices as a full partner on the health care team and consistently demonstrates safe practice within the organizational professional practice model. The Clinical Nurse 2 Colleague possesses the knowledge, skills and the attitude to effectively meet standards for competent professional nursing practice as specified in the Clinical Nurse 2 position description addendum.

Credentials:
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
- BLS/CPR, as a healthcare provider as per the American Heart Association.
- Registered Nurse - PA (Required)
- Pennsylvania RN licensure
Education or Equivalent
Experience:
- Bachelor of Science Nursing (Required)
- BSN from an accredited school of nursing and More than 15 months relevant professional nursing experience and completion of the Nurse Residency Program, if applicable.
