Position Overview

As a hospital provider on the General Pediatric unit, you will serve as a front-line provider caring for patients with a variety of medical needs, including viral illnesses, asthma, and complex conditions.

Working in collaboration with an attending physician, you will assess patients, develop plans of care, order medications and diagnostic studies, interpret results, and provide updates to patients and families. You will also serve as a primary point of contact for consults and as an interdisciplinary team member for your patients.

The role includes clinical practice, consultation, professional development, education, and research.

Position highlights include:

• Full-time, 1.0 FTE / 40 hours per week
• Three 13-hour shifts per week
• Shifts include 7:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. or 8:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m.
• Rotational nights, weekends, and holidays
• Approximately 4–6 night shifts per month, subject to change
• Schedule provided approximately three months in advance
• General pediatric inpatient rounding
• Collaboration with attending physicians
• Main Hospital team includes 24 APPs
• Daytime patient ratio: approximately 1 APP to 6 patients
• Night patient ratio: approximately 1 APP to 12 patients

The position includes off-shift responsibilities based on the clinical needs of the practice environment.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be an experienced Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant with:

• At least 1 year of APP clinical experience
• Inpatient or acute care experience
• Pediatric experience or background
• Intensive ICU or hospital medicine experience may also be considered
• FNP candidates may be considered with a pediatric background, intensive ICU or hospital medicine background, or pediatric rotation experience
• Ability to work a rotational schedule that includes nights, weekends, and holidays

What You Will Do

• Assess complex acute, critical, and chronically ill patients for urgent and emergent conditions, using relevant data to evaluate physiologic instability and formulate plans of care.
• Perform therapeutic interventions to stabilize acute and critical health problems in accordance with the Scope of Practice Document and credentialing/privileging requirements.
• Analyze indications, contraindications, risks of complications, and cost-benefits of therapeutic interventions.
• Manage plans of care through evaluation, modification, and documentation based on patient response to therapy.
• Manage changes in patient condition with a focus on optimizing outcomes.
• Incorporate health promotion, health protection, and injury prevention measures into plans of care within the context of complex acute, critical, and chronic illness.
• Facilitate patient transitions between and within healthcare settings.
• Serve as an educational resource to patients and families, nursing staff, and provider teams.
• Act as a consultant to multidisciplinary healthcare team members.
• Participate in scholarly activities, including research and education.
• Maintain required competencies, identify learning needs, and participate in appropriate educational opportunities.
• Support the professional development of others by serving as a preceptor and mentor to nurses, nurse practitioners, students, and other healthcare providers.
• Demonstrate a commitment to patient safety by identifying safety concerns, adapting practices to enhance safety, utilizing system reporting mechanisms, and sharing accountability for safe practice.
