A Research Associate Scientist position is available within the research team of Prof. Struan Grant at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute, an interdisciplinary institution dedicated to conducting basic, clinical and translational research on conditions and diseases that affect children. The Research Associate Scientist will be affiliated with the Grant lab, performing research, regulatory and managerial responsibilities. The Grant lab's overarching aim is to elucidate the genetic basis of complex traits, principally in pediatrics – focusing principally on sleep, diabetes, bone and obesity-related traits. These studies will build on the already seminal work that has emerged from genome wide studies conducted at CHOP and at other peer institutions.

Overall, the area of investigation for the Grant lab allows the ideal candidate to acquire and develop important skillsets, providing unique professional and scientific opportunities. Furthermore, there will be opportunities to build collaborative projects focused on sleep, diabetes, bone and obesity-related traits.

The successful candidate will possess excellent research, communication, organizational and leadership skills, including detailed recordkeeping, computer literacy, scientific writing and the ability to contribute to method development and validation. After initial training, this individual will perform tasks independently with minimal guidance, and will work with the Principal Investigator, Prof. Struan Grant, in facilitating the daily running of the operation as part of the position to help develop lab management skills.

We are looking for a candidate with experience in various molecular biology techniques, utilization of bioinformatics tools, application of statistical methods and supervision of research scientists. Job-Specific Responsibilities:

Have research projects in the Grant lab, which they are driving to ensure continued scientific development. In coordination with the Principal Investigator, ensure that projects are conducted by the team in a timely and efficient manner. Facilitate the daily running of the lab operation. Liaise with external collaborators on an as needed basis. Pursue funding for their research, plus participate in team efforts to raise funding for the respective labs.

What You Will Do:
  • Assists faculty in the conduct of research of significant value in the basic and/or translational science area
  • Plans, conducts research projects within the federal, institutional regulations and policies
  • Collaborates with researchers, external agencies and institutions to develop cooperative research initiatives
  • Trains technical staff, students in lab procedures
  • Reviews manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals
  • Assists with the submission of grant applications, contracts and research projects funding
  • Participates in free discussion, research progress, and overall morale
  • Responsible for appropriate use of research funds
  • May supervise students or other research staff as assigned
Education

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree Required
  • Master's Degree Preferred
  • Doctorate Preferred
Experience

Qualifications:
  • At least seven (7) years of directly relevant post grad scientific lab experience Required
  • At least nine (9) years of directly relevant post grad scientific lab experience Preferred
  • Successful completion of a Post Doc Fellowship Preferred
