Assistant Athletic Coach - High School

Bishop McDevitt High School, Harrisburg, PA

Nature of Position

Assist the head coach for a particular sport with training and instruction of student athletes, maintaining practice and play schedules, and conforming to all diocesan, school, league, and PIAA policies. Represent the School, the Diocese, and community professionally in keeping with the school’s Catholic character and Gospel values. All assistant coaches report directly to the head varsity coach.

Job Description (General)

Duties may include any or all of the following:

  • Apply knowledge of skills, techniques, and rules of the sport to assist athletes to reach their fullest potential.
  • Develop positive team spirit and morale.
  • Display sound methods to teach skills and techniques.
  • Maintain discipline in a firm and friendly manner.
  • Conduct well‑planned practice sessions.
  • Help with issuing, inventory and cleaning of equipment.
  • Assist the head coach in working with community organizations to foster the development of a feeder program within the high school and parishes.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of activities within the school that encourage the development of an articulated feeder program within the high school and parishes.
  • Assist the head coach and athletic director with recruiting qualified coaches for the program.
  • Help the head coach annually evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the program.
  • Establish and maintain a positive line of communication with student athletes, parents, and community.
  • Implement the Coaching Philosophy of the head coach in the program.
  • Assume additional responsibilities, tasks, and duties as may be determined by the head coach.
  • Implement the school and Diocesan Athletic Philosophy and program of Christian formation.
Relationships with Coaching Staff
  • Establish and maintain a positive relationship with all members of the coaching staff.
  • Support the philosophy and decisions of the Varsity Head Coach.
  • Perform duties assigned by the Varsity Head Coach.
  • Assist the Varsity Head Coach in reviewing the academic progress of student‑athletes and the ineligibility list.
Relationships with Student‑Athletes and Parents
  • Establish and maintain a positive relationship with all members of the team.
  • Maintain appropriate communication with student‑athletes.
  • Demonstrate and generate respect for student‑athletes.
  • Serve as a role model to student‑athletes and demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times.
Relationship with Parents
  • Maintain an appropriate rapport with players’ parents/guardians. If concerns arise, attempt to address them directly. If a solution is not reached, notify the Athletic Director to set up a meeting.
Relationships with Administration, School Staff, and Coaches
  • Support the philosophy of the Athletic Department and the decisions of the Administration.
  • Develop and maintain a positive rapport with other members of the Bishop McDevitt Athletic Department, professional staff, and Administration. Athletic Personnel should treat other staff members with respect and professional courtesy at all times.
Knowledge of Sport
  • Review and understand the rules of the sport, as well as the rules and regulations of Mid Penn, District III, and PIAA.
  • Possess the ability to teach, develop, and improve athletes’ skills.
  • Possess knowledge of scheme and tactics as related to the sport.
  • Demonstrate strong interest in coaching the sport.
Practice and Competitions
  • Demonstrate attendance and punctuality; be prompt for meetings, practices, and games.
  • Demonstrate respect for student athletes, coaches, and officials.
  • Demonstrate the ability to motivate student athletes.
  • Accompany the team at all contests both home and away.
  • Assist with the organization of practices and contests.
Experience & Education
  • Coach:
    Sufficient education to meet knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • High school assistant coach must be familiar with the rules and regulations of the sports they plan on coaching. This is acquired through playing and studying the sport.…
