Tunnel Maintainer

As a Tunnel Maintainer with the Department of Transportation, you will play an essential part in keeping tunnels safe and traffic flowing. This job gives you the opportunity to work hands‑on while supporting public safety and transportation efficiency. You will take on meaningful tasks that help protect drivers and maintain key infrastructure. Become part of a dependable team serving communities across the region.

• Perform cleaning, repairs, and upkeep of tunnel structures and surrounding areas.
• Assist motorists and first responders during traffic disruptions and restore normal traffic flow.
• Observe tunnel conditions such as airflow, fire risks, and over‑height vehicle concerns.
• Use clear communication with employees and responders to maintain awareness during operations.
• Operate vehicles, tools, and machinery required for maintenance, towing, and tunnel washing.
• Deploy cones, signs, and barriers to protect workers and guide traffic during lane closures.

• Full‑time employment, rotating 24/7 operations.
• Shifts vary: 9:30 PM – 5:30 AM, 5:30 AM – 1:30 PM, 1:30 PM – 9:30 PM, each with a 30‑minute lunch.
• Travel, overtime, and shift work required.
• Telework: not permitted.
• Salary: selected candidates start at the annual salary of $53,141 (before taxes).

• Two years of experience in roadway maintenance and repair, emergency services, towing and roadside assistance, or traffic control work; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Demonstrated ability to operate equipment with a manual transmission.
• Active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake Restriction removed (or equivalent).
• Within the probationary period, obtain a certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for heavy truck and loader operation.
• Obtain additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned equipment during the probationary period.

• All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate per FMSA regulations.
• All employees must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction removed.

• You must be able to perform essential job functions.
