Job Overview:
The Senior Staff Accountant is responsible for performing and overseeing complex accounting functions, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, and supporting month-end and year-end close processes. This role serves as a technical accounting resource, works independently with minimal supervision, and provides guidance to junior accounting staff. The Senior Staff Accountant partners closely with the Controller and other cross-functional teams to maintain strong internal controls and drive continuous process improvements.
- Prepare, review, and post journal entries in accordance with GAAP
- Perform complex account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies
- Lead assigned areas of the month-end and year-end close processes
- Prepare financial statements, schedules, and management reports
- Analyze financial results and provide variance explanations
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and internal controls
- Assist with internal and external audits; prepare audit schedules and documentation
- Support internal control testing, as applicable
- Maintain and improve accounting policies and procedures
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, efficiency, and accuracy
- Assist with accounting system implementations, upgrades, and testing
- Develop and maintain process documentation and work instructions
- Serve as a subject-matter expert for assigned accounting areas
- Provide training, guidance, and informal mentoring to junior staff
- Partner with cross-functional teams (AP, AR, Operations, Payroll)
- Support special projects and ad-hoc analyses as needed
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
- 4+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Public accounting experience a plus
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting principles
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, formulas)
- Experience with ERP/accounting systems (e.g., Net Suite, Oracle, SAP, Dynamics)
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- CPA or CPA-eligible strongly preferred
