S&S Paving & Construction is one of Arizona’s largest heavy civil construction contractors, self-performing Asphalt Paving, Grading, Concrete, and Earthwork services for commercial, municipal, and federal infrastructure projects.

Position Summary

S&S Paving & Construction is seeking an experienced Controller to join our highly successful organization. This leadership role is responsible for overseeing all accounting operations, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, and supporting strategic financial initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess a strong public accounting background, active CPA certification (preferred), and significant experience working with or auditing construction companies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all daily accounting operations, including Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Cash Management, Payroll, and Project Accounting.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Maintain compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
  • Collaborate with the CFO on financial planning, forecasting, budgeting, and strategic initiatives.
  • Prepare and present financial reports and analysis to executive leadership.
  • Oversee monthly and year-end close processes.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain strong internal controls and accounting procedures.
  • Coordinate and manage annual financial statement audits and tax engagements.
  • Monitor work-in-progress schedules and percentage-of-completion accounting.
  • Analyze financial performance and identify opportunities for process improvement.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting team members.
  • Support private equity reporting requirements and lender reporting obligations.
  • Assist with acquisitions, integrations, and other strategic initiatives as needed.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of public accounting experience with significant exposure to construction clients.
  • Strong technical accounting and auditing knowledge.
  • Thorough understanding of percentage-of-completion accounting and construction financial reporting.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP functions, Power Query, and financial modeling.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven leadership and team management experience.

Preferred

  • Experience with Vista Viewpoint and HCSS Heavy Job software.
  • Master's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Construction industry controller or assistant controller experience.

Requirements

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive financial information.

  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment screening requirements.
