Privately held construction organization seeking an experienced accounting & finance leader to oversee its accounting function and provide financial guidance across the business. This individual will be responsible for maintaining strong financial controls, delivering accurate financial reporting, supporting planning activities, and helping leadership evaluate business and project performance.
The ideal candidate is a hands‑on accounting professional with experience in a project‑driven environment who can balance strategic responsibilities with day‑to‑day financial oversight. This individual should be comfortable working with project accounting, cost reporting, work‑in‑progress analysis, forecasting, and operational financial metrics while identifying opportunities to strengthen systems and processes.
Areas of Responsibility- Provide overall leadership for the accounting and finance function supporting the organization’s operations.
- Direct the preparation and review of periodic financial statements, management reports, project financial reports, and related analyses.
- Oversee accounting operations, including general ledger activity, reconciliations, billing, receivables, payables, account management, and project‑related accounting.
- Maintain effective procedures surrounding financial controls, reporting accuracy, project cost tracking, and operational efficiency.
- Oversee job cost accounting and monitor labor, materials, subcontractor, equipment, and other direct and indirect project costs.
- Review work‑in‑progress schedules, project profitability, cost‑to‑complete information, committed costs, and job‑level financial performance.
- Partner with operational and project leadership to investigate cost variances, margin changes, budget performance, and other financial trends.
- Lead annual planning, project budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and ongoing evaluation of financial performance.
- Monitor contract‑related billing, accounts receivable, collections, retainage, and other project‑driven cash flow considerations.
- Oversee timely completion of monthly and annual close processes, including project accruals, cost allocations, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
- Review project forecasts and financial results to identify emerging risks, opportunities, and potential changes to expected profitability.
- Support leadership with financial analysis related to new projects, resource allocation, operational performance, and strategic planning.
- Coordinate with external advisors and financial partners on audits, tax matters, banking activities, bonding requirements, and other periodic financial requirements.
- Ensure accounting practices remain consistent with applicable accounting standards, regulatory obligations, internal policies, and industry requirements.
- Assess accounting systems, ERP functionality, reporting processes, and project accounting workflows and implement improvements that enhance scalability, accuracy, and efficiency.
- Recruit, supervise, mentor, and develop accounting personnel while establishing appropriate priorities, processes, and accountability.
- Participate in broader financial and operational initiatives as a senior member of the organization.
