Job Summary
What does it take to build the massive concrete bridge girders that carry thousands of Arizona drivers every day? Join ADOT's Structural Materials team and find out. Our technicians work directly with bridge construction materials from the earliest stages of fabrication through final acceptance. You'll inspect rebar cages, observe concrete placements, verify quality standards in the field, and perform laboratory testing that helps ensure Arizona's bridges are built to last.
This position offers a unique blend of field inspections and hands‑on laboratory work, providing variety, technical challenges, and opportunities to learn something new every day. - Transportation Construction Technician 1 (Grade 17):
Inspect highway construction work, read and interpret plans, perform field tests, sample materials, calculate areas of geometric shapes, attend safety and training meetings. - Transportation Construction Technician 2 (Grade 18):
Inspect highway construction for compliance, examine materials and conditions, conduct field material tests, review engineering project records, research relevant policies and regulations, consult manuals and codes, record workflow, attend training and safety meetings. - Transportation Construction Technician 3 (Grade 19):
Perform a broad scope of high‑level duties including inspection of highway construction for compliance, documenting quantity lists, consulting manuals and regulations, recording work history, and inspecting project records.
- Transportation Construction Technician 1: 1 year of job‑related construction experience; includes civil engineering principles, construction inspection methods, materials testing procedures, Manual of Uniform Traffic Control for work zones, equipment operation, and reading construction documents.
- Transportation Construction Technician 2: 2 years of job‑related construction experience; similar experience as above.
- Transportation Construction Technician 3: 3 years of job‑related construction experience; similar experience as above.
- Transportation Construction Technician I – One year construction‑related experience.
- Transportation Construction Technician II – Two years construction‑related experience.
- Transportation Construction Technician III – Three years construction‑related experience.
American Concrete Institute and Arizona Technical Testing Institute certification required within 1 year of hire. A medical/physical evaluation is required prior to appointment. Driving or use of a vehicle is an essential function; employees must possess a current, valid, class‑appropriate driver’s license, complete required training, and maintain an acceptable driving record.
