Overview
Nex Gen is looking to add a Chief Estimator to the Steel Division in Phoenix, Arizona!
ResponsibilitiesPosition Summary
The Chief Estimator is responsible for managing the overall bid process for estimating steel projects that are assigned to the Steel Division. They will pursue projects throughout the pre‑proposal and proposal cycle, preparing detailed estimates of structural steel projects that include labor, equipment, and material fabrication costs. They must understand steel fabrication processes and materials, and have experience developing accurate cost estimates.
They are also responsible for maintaining Building Connected bid invitations, creating bid invites to vendors and suppliers, updating bid information, and submitting proposals through Building Connected portal or other websites as required.
- The Chief Estimator works closely with the Business Unit Leader, General Superintendent, Safety Department, and Quality Manager to develop bid strategies, resource availability, vendor relationships, safety requirements, quality requirements, and project schedules, in order to provide a comprehensive estimate.
- They are responsible for updating the bid logs in , Steel Division folders, the Bid Status log in Excel, and other logs or related documents required to be maintained.
- Must have a good understanding of erection requirements and procedures to be able to provide accurate cost estimates associated with crane selection, rigging, bracing, and general erection of structural and miscellaneous steel.
- The ability to travel to project sites for pre‑construction and construction visits.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or construction management or a minimum of ten years’ experience in the construction industry, along with a minimum of five years of experience in commercial structural steel or miscellaneous metals.
- Communicates well both verbally and in writing, creates accurate and punctual reports, delivers presentations, shares information and ideas with others, and has good listening skills.
- Ability to identify, assimilate and comprehend the critical elements of a situation to extract and interpret implications of courses of action to attend to details of a problem.
- Effectiveness in planning and controlling work, motivating and developing subordinates, improving work methods and results, encouraging and supporting suggestions for work improvements, etc.
- Knowledge of design principles and engineering specifications related to structural steel.
- Proficiency in using software programs related to structural steel design and estimation. Similar to Tekla, E‑Takeoff, Sage, Stack, etc.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and other technical documents.
- Understanding of basic geometry and trigonometry.
- Ability to calculate loads and stresses on structural steel members.
- Knowledge of local building codes and regulations.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Excellent communication, problem solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work with other team members to ensure accuracy and efficiency in projects.
- Plans for and uses resources efficiently, always looks for ways to reduce costs.
- Is attentive to detail and accuracy, is committed to excellence, looks for improvements continuously, monitors quality levels, finds root cause of quality problems, owns/acts on quality problems.
- Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
- Experience in commercial structural steel projects.
- Experienced with Construction Scheduling.
