Senior Construction Inspector; Traffic Investigator - Street Transportation Department

About This Position

The Traffic Services Division within the Street Transportation Department ensures safe movement of traffic and pedestrians. Responsibilities include review of street signs, traffic signals/left-turn arrows, school safety, visibility obstruction removal, on-street parking, neighborhood cut-through, traffic safety, and bikeway coordination.

• Respond to field review requests from residents, city staff, and council regarding traffic studies, traffic sign and paint changes, advise on changes based on engineering judgment and policy.
• Monitor assigned geographical areas and proactively identify code violations, traffic sign and paint maintenance needs.
• Inspection of public right of way for obstructions and/or sight triangle violations and gain voluntary compliance from responsible parties.
• Complete comprehensive traffic studies.
• Compute and analyze data gathered from traffic studies and provide written recommendations based on the results.
• Coordinate the construction of City projects with utilities, other departments, and contractors.
• Objectively interpret and consistently apply code requirements and related standards in accordance with department policies.
• Work in the field and in extreme weather conditions for an extended period of time.

• Knowledge of traffic engineering principles, code compliance and plan review.
• Knowledge of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Ability to provide quality customer service to the public by telephone, email, or in person.

Pay Range: $29.44 to $43.49 per hour.

Hiring Range: $29.44 to $41.42 per hour.

Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification. Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

• Three years of experience in construction related activities
• One year of experience in the inspection of public works construction projects
• Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted
• All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position
• Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage

• Working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust

• Two years of code enforcement experience

• Conducting inspections involving public right of way or traffic control devices
• Plan review and reading for signing, striping, paving plans, site plans, and plats
• Handling citizen complaints or concerns
