Concorde Education is seeking an engaging, student-centered Comic Book Creation Instructor to facilitate a short-format after-school enrichment course for students. This course provides an interactive, project-based introduction to comic creation as both a storytelling medium and a visual art form. Students develop original characters and narratives while learning foundational comic structure, page layout, and illustration techniques.
Instruction should be age-appropriate and inclusive, with a focus on creativity, communication, collaboration, and iterative improvement. The instructor will deliver instruction across a typical 10-week cycle, with pacing adapted to student needs and site logistics.
What You Will TeachStudents will learn how to plan and produce a comic or short graphic narrative from concept to final draft. Depending on grade level and available resources, learners may create comics using traditional materials (pencil/ink, paper) and/or digital tools (school-approved apps for drawing, layout, or publishing). Lessons emphasize story planning, scripting, panel composition, visual clarity, and revision processes.
Major Topics Can Include- Comic conventions and visual storytelling fundamentals
- Character design (appearance, traits, goals, motivations)
- Plot structure (beginning/middle/end, conflict, pacing)
- Scriptwriting basics (scene planning, dialogue, narration)
- Paneling and page layout (flow, composition, framing, perspective)
- Speech bubbles, captions, lettering, and readability
- Visual techniques (expressions, body language, action lines, tone)
- Inking, shading, and finishing techniques (age-appropriate)
- Storyboarding, drafting, peer feedback, and revision cycles
- Publishing formats (mini-zine, booklet, digital PDF, slideshow comic)
- Deliver a 10-session course with clear objectives and engaging, hands-on instruction
- Lead students through the full creative process from concept development to a finished comic artifact
- Provide technique demonstrations and structured supports for varying skill levels
- Maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment aligned to site policies
- Facilitate constructive peer feedback routines that emphasize respect and growth
- Communicate professionally with site staff and Concorde program contacts regarding attendance and session completion tracking
- Adapt pacing and activities to match student readiness while maintaining course outcomes
- Minimum of 60 college credits (or Associate degree in progress/completed)
- Experience with comic creation, illustration, visual storytelling, creative writing, or a related field
- Experience working with school-age students in structured settings (school, camp, after-school, tutoring, youth programs)
- Strong facilitation skills, clear communication, and comfort leading creative projects
- Reliable, punctual, and professional; able to follow school policies and program boundaries
- Comfort supporting students with traditional and/or digital creation tools, depending on site resources
