Position Title:

Elementary Health Assistant

Supervisor:
Principal or Designee

Purpose and Scope

Under the supervision of the principal, administrator, or designee, the Health Assistant implements a comprehensive school wellness program that promotes the general health and well-being and safety of the students, staff, and visitors; performs general health office duties in accordance with state and diocesan health laws and district procedures; and does related work as required.

    • Provides opportunities for the students to be prepared for life in today's Church and society

  • Supervision
    • Assure that state and diocesan reporting requirements are adhered to.
    • Limited supervision to use independent judgment when performing duties
  • Examples of Duties
    • Screens ill or injured students according to established procedures; administers routine first aid, determines if a student remains at school, or parent contact is made to pick up the ill or injured child, with further instructions given.
    • Records all information on the health status of students on individual health records and/or clinic visits; screens student records for proper immunizations (verified through state program); alerts parents of needed immunizations and maintains communication until records of immunizations are provided; provides copies of updated information to selected personnel.
    • Ensures all eligible students comply with sports physicals
    • Monitors staff compliance with diocesan health and safety requirements
    • Prepares and arranges for yearly vision and hearing screenings, and makes necessary professional referrals and follow-up
    • Communicates to help control the spread of contagious diseases by following procedures specified by the school’s policies and procedures in conjunction with the State guidelines;
    • Assists with verification of selected pupil absences by telephone contacts with parents; readmits students to school who have been out with a communicable disease, extended illness, injury, or surgery; completes student accident reports.
  • Administers prescribed medication as ordered by the physician and/or parent
    • Assembles and distributes first aid kits for classrooms or sports activities; responsible for maintaining and requisitioning first aid and health supplies
  • Provides a wide variety of routine clerical and typing work
    • Maintains the health office in a clean and orderly manner
    • Follows sanitizing protocols to isolate and remove any bodily fluids on campus
  • Provide excuses for physical education to students when they are assigned, per school policy
    • Maintains all student/staff medical records with confidentiality and discretion
  • Professional Growth
    • Continued professional development to remain current with religious and academic certifications
    • Keeps informed of current practices through professional reading and educational opportunities
    • Participates in professional activities and joins appropriate professional organizations
    • Attends Diocesan-sponsored in-services and meetings
    • Attends and actively participates in school faculty meetings and in-services
    • Actively participates in the process of continuous school improvement
    • Maintains personal professional development records

    • Assist with crisis management as assigned.
