Purpose Statement

The job of Certified Educational Interpreter - Sign Language is to provide support to the instructional program, working with special needs students one‑on‑one or in small groups, following educational and behavioral plans, and reporting students’ daily activities. This job reports to Teacher and Site Administrator.

Essential Functions
  • Provide simultaneous sign‑language interpretation during the educational day in small group or individual settings.
  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
  • Provide, under supervision, instruction to students (e.g., math, science, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills, job skills) to implement IEP goals and aid students’ transition to mainstream classrooms or workplaces.
  • Communicate with teacher(s) and professionals (Speech Therapist, PTs, OTs, etc.) to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
  • Document students’ daily activities (behavior, completed assignments, on/off‑task times) to complete daily logs and hourly activity records.
  • Evaluate situations involving staff, students, parents, or the public to take action or provide referrals.
  • Implement behavioral plans under supervision to reinforce learning concepts.
  • Maintain manual and electronic files/records for written reference and mandated requirements.
  • Model conversation, manners, cleanup activities, listening, skills, and everyday interactions to demonstrate appropriate social behavior in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Remain with the student at all times to ensure safety, de‑escalate situations, and respond to emergencies.
Other Functions

Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Operate standard office equipment and use relevant software; prepare and maintain accurate records.
  • Basic math skills (algebra and/or geometry).
  • Read manuals, write documents in prescribed formats, and present information orally and in writing.
  • Apply age‑appropriate activities when working with high‑risk youth.
  • Understand complex, multi‑step written and oral instructions; use proper grammar and punctuation.
  • Interpret at a normal conversational rate in American Sign Language and straight‑English signing.
  • Work flexibly with diverse individuals and groups; adapt language usage as needed.
  • Analyze issues and create action plans; prioritize, meet deadlines, maintain confidentiality.
  • Acquire and maintain QAS Level 3, RID Certification.
Experience

Job‑related experience within a specialized field is required.

Education

Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in a job‑related area.

Certifications and Licenses
  • Online Driver Training Certification, Driver’s License, Evidence of Insurability
  • Criminal Background Clearance
  • Valid Arizona DPS Level I IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
Clearances and Testing

MMR;
Pre‑Employment Proficiency Test; FLSA Status – Non‑Exempt.
