Purpose Statement

The job of Instructional Assistant – Special Education is to provide support to the instructional program with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care and instruction of special needs students in the regular classroom, a self‑contained classroom and/or with an individual student; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior during non‑classroom time; and providing information to appropriate school personnel.

Essential Functions
  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under teacher direction to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
  • Administer tests, homework, make‑up work, etc. to support teachers.
  • Assist medically fragile, physically disabled, or developmentally delayed students with personal hygiene and immediate health needs.
  • Attend meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures) to acquire or convey information relevant to job functions.
  • Communicate with supervising staff, support personnel, and parents to assist in evaluating progress and implementing IEP objectives.
  • Escort students to bathrooms, offices, classrooms to ensure efficient and safe arrival.
  • Implement behavioral plans under teacher supervision to reinforce learning concepts.
  • Intervene in conflicts using appropriate physical or therapeutic approaches to diffuse confrontations.
  • Document instructional materials and files to ensure availability and meet mandated requirements.
  • Model conversation, manners, clean‑up activities, listening, job skills, and everyday interactions to demonstrate appropriate social behavior.
  • Monitor student schedules and behavior plans during assigned periods across various environments.
  • Perform clerical functions (copying, filing, data entry) to support the instructional program.
  • Provide instruction on individual and group activities under teacher guidance to reinforce objectives and implement IEP plans.
  • Remain with students at all times to ensure safety, remove when necessary, and de‑escalate situations.
  • Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
Other Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Skills:

    adherence to safety practices; use of standard office equipment and software; maintain accurate records.
  • Knowledge: basic math (fractions, percents, ratios); read manuals; write documents; present information; understand instructional procedures, child development, and safety practices.
  • Abilities: schedule activities; gather and collate data; operate equipment; work with diverse individuals; problem‑solve; maintain confidentiality; work as part of a team.
  • Experience:

    Job‑related experience desired.
  • Education:

    High school diploma or GED.
  • Certification: CPR Certificate, First Aid Certificate.
  • Continuing

    Education:

    QBS Certificate; maintain certificates and licenses.
  • Clearances:
    Criminal background check;
    Valid Arizona DPS Level I IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card (forms available /services/public/fingerprint).
