Job Description

Purpose Statement

Provide support to instructional processes by serving as a special education teacher, developing students with special needs in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living; supervising students, developing lesson plans, delivering group and individual instruction, collaborating with staff, and communicating with parents.

Essential Functions
  • Administer developmental testing programs and assessments to assess competency levels and develop individual learning plans.
  • Provide first aid and assistance to medically fragile children.
  • Advise parents/guardians on student progress, expectations, achievements, and improvement methods.
  • Assess student progress toward objectives and provide feedback.
  • Collaborate with instructional staff, parents, and community resources to improve outcomes.
  • Provide counseling to improve performance, health status, problem solving, and personal issues.
  • Demonstrate pedagogical approaches to engage learners.
  • Differentiates classroom work according to individualized learning programs.
  • Direct assistant teachers, student teachers, paraprofessionals, volunteers, and student workers.
  • Instruct students to improve academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills.
  • Maintain confidential and nonconfidential records.
  • Manage student behavior and monitor student safety across environments.
  • Order supplies and equipment.
  • Participate in meetings (IEPs, staff, PLC) and prepare written materials.
  • Report health and safety issues.
  • Respond to emergencies and inquiries.
  • Serve as case manager for special education students.
  • Support classroom teachers in implementing curriculum and individual plans.
Job Requirements

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Ability to administer assessments and use software applications.
  • Knowledge of algebra/geometry, technical information, appropriate policies, age-appropriate activities, lesson plan requirements, child development stages, behavior management, and instruction methods.
  • Ability to schedule activities, gather data, work flexibly, maintain confidentiality, and exhibit patience.
  • Problem‑solving skills for data and equipment.

Responsibility

Work under limited supervision, direct others, use resources from other units, and impact organizational services.

Work Environment

Physical demands include significant lifting, stooping, kneeling, crawling, fine finger dexterity; 10% sitting, 50% walking, 40% standing; exposure to risks.
