2026-27 SPED Instructional Assistant/Special Needs – Paradise Valley HS

Starting Date: Aug 3, 2026

Term: 9 months, 6.5 hours/day (Aug 3, 2026 – May 27, 2027)

Grade: 16,
Pay: $16.99 per hour

Purpose Statement

The Instructional Assistant–Special Education provides support to the instructional program, assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students across classrooms and in individual settings. The role involves implementing instructional plans, monitoring student behavior, and communicating progress with staff and parents.

Essential Functions
  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to reinforce objectives.
  • Administer tests, homework, and make‑up work to support teachers.
  • Assist medically fragile or developmentally delayed students with personal hygiene and health care needs.
  • Attend meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures).
  • Communicate with instructional staff, support personnel, and parents to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
  • Escort students to and from destinations to ensure safety and punctuality.
  • Implement behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders under teacher supervision.
  • Intervene in conflicts using appropriate physical or therapeutic approaches to diffuse confrontations.
  • Document instructional materials and records for availability, reference, and compliance.
  • Model appropriate social interaction, conversation, and job skills in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Monitor students’ daily schedules and behavior plans for a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Surveil students in various school settings (e.g., restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, cafeteria) for safety.
  • Perform clerical functions such as copying, filing, and data entry to support the instructional program.
  • Provide individual and group instruction under teacher supervision to reinforce objectives and implement IEP plans.
  • Remain with students at all times to ensure safety, remove them when necessary, and de‑escalate situations outside the classroom.
  • Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
Other Functions

Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; additional training or coursework in special education is an advantage.

Experience: Job‑related experience is desired.

Certifications: CPR Certificate, First Aid Certificate.

Continuing

Education:

QBS Certificate (maintained when required).

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Adhere to safety practices and operate standard office equipment.
  • Apply basic math skills (fractions, percentages). Read manuals and prepare documents.
  • Communicate with diverse groups, maintain confidentiality, and work as part of a team.
  • Adapt to changing priorities, schedule activities, and manage interruptions.

Work Environment: Significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling; frequent stooping, kneeling, and crouching; 10% sitting, 60% walking, 30% standing. Exposure to risk of injury or illness under minimal temperature variations.

Clearances

Criminal Background Clearance and Valid Arizona DPS Level I IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
