Job Summary

South Mountain Community College (SMCC) is seeking a Residential Psychology Faculty member to join the Communication, Fine Arts, and Social Sciences Division (CFASS). The ideal candidate will have expertise in Introduction to Psychology and at least one additional area, such as Statistics in Psychological Research, Psychology and Culture, Developmental Psychology, Psychological Disorders, Social Psychology, Psychology of Personality, Psychology of Human Sexuality, or Biopsychology.

SMCC is a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and a Minority-Serving Institution (MSI). The position requires in‑person teaching with opportunities for online instruction and includes active participation in division and college‑wide service.

Essential Functions
  • Teaches a diverse student population using multiple instructional and assessment methods in classroom/lab, online, hybrid, accelerated, and alternative formats.
  • Develops syllabi and course materials; evaluates student learning; prepares and grades exams and assignments; maintains grades and office hours.
  • Develops curriculum and enhances pedagogical skills to stay current with trends in Psychology; engages in professional development.
  • Participates in college‑wide learning outcome assessments, course development, and division, campus, and district committees; performs related duties.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with diverse administrators, faculty, staff, students, and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Master’s degree or higher in Psychology
  • Or a Master’s degree in any field with 18 graduate‑level credits in these prefixes/subjects (PSY, PSYC, PSYCH)
  • Or a Master’s degree in any teaching field with Education, with a minimum of eighteen (18) graduate semester hours in a Psychology area (see list of acceptable disciplines below)
  • Acceptable disciplines and coursework include, but are not limited to: animal research, human research, research methods, statistics, social sciences, individual group behavior, development of human behavior, cognitive sciences, behavioral sciences, behavior analysis, neuroscience, brain and behavior, psychological disorders, psychopathology, developmental disorders, behavioral disorders, human factors, human engineering, sensation perception
Desired Qualifications
  • A. Doctorate or Master’s in Psychology
  • B. Two or more years of experience teaching Introduction to Psychology in a community college setting
  • C. Two or more years of teaching experience and/or evidence of sufficient preparation to teach one or more specialized undergraduate Psychology courses, such as:
    • Introduction to Statistics
    • Psychology and Culture
    • Developmental Psychology
    • Psychological Disorders
    • Social Psychology
    • Psychology of Personality
    • Psychology of Human Sexuality
    • Biopsychology
  • D. Knowledge and use of innovative assessment strategies to enhance student learning and improve instruction
  • E. Knowledge and use of innovative pedagogical practices that positively impact student success
  • F. Knowledge and use of strategies that support the academic success of individuals from diverse abilities and backgrounds, particularly underrepresented populations
  • G. One year of relevant full‑time MCCCD experience within the past two years
Special Working Conditions
  • May be required to travel or be assigned to all MCCCD locations
  • May be required to work evenings and weekends
  • May require prolonged periods of sitting and computer use
  • May be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs
  • Requires physical presence on campus, with possible partial online or remote teaching depending on college needs
