COORDINATOR OF FAITH FORMATION

Reports to: Pastor

FLSA Status: Exempt

The Coordinator of Faith Formation is responsible for planning, integrating, implementing, overseeing, and evaluating religious education and sacramental preparation for the parish community, with a primary focus on catechetical formation for elementary children and adults.

Responsibilities

Coordination and Administration:

  • Serves as a member of the parish staff and administration team. Participates in decision-making regarding total parish direction and activities. Attends all staff meetings, department head meetings, Diocesan DRE meetings, Faith Formation team meetings, prayer days, and educational days.
  • Leads and supervises the formation team.
  • Develops catechetical programs and approves curriculum for various age levels from pre-school through adult, in accordance with the Religious Education Guidelines of the Diocese of Phoenix, including sacramental preparation. Distributes curriculum to catechists, trains catechists on the curriculum, and supervises classes.
  • Obtains approval and support from the Pastor for the general direction of the religious education of the parish, and keeps the Pastor informed of programs.
  • Provides recruitment and training for catechists, and supports opportunities for catechist certification specified by the Diocesan Office of Catechesis.
  • Ensures Safe Environment compliance for staff, catechists, volunteers, and includes child‑safe curriculum for children and teens within catechetical programs.
  • Schedules regular formation staff meetings to develop a faith community and provide professional in‑service growth.
  • Conducts regular evaluations of the effectiveness of the Faith Formation program with the Pastor and Parish Director.
  • Coordinates parish missions and, with the Pastor’s input, selects the speaker for the mission and other adult and staff formation opportunities and spiritual growth.
  • Manages, with Faith Formation Coordinators, the selection, purchasing, and stocking of catechetical materials for religious education and Family Ministry.
  • Continues personal growth in faith and professional advancement through meetings, conventions, and workshops concerning religious education and current material.
  • Supervision:

  • Supervises and evaluates the ministry effectiveness of
    • Youth Minister
    • Coordinator of Children’s Catechesis
    • Family Ministry
    • Bible Study Leaders (e.g., “That Man is You”, “Endow”, “Brant Pitre”, “Gospel”, etc.)
  • Supervises and evaluates office support personnel for the Faith Formation department.
  • Monitors all expenditures and payroll timesheets for the Faith Formation Team.
  • Supervises and coordinates elementary religious education and adult formation catechists and program volunteers in all areas. Attends evening sacramental programs each week (typically once a week).
  • Supervises and monitors the Alpha program.
  • Qualifications

    Required Knowledge and

    Skills:

    • Practicing Catholic, faithful to the Magisterium, and in good standing with the Catholic Church.
    • Successful completion of the Diocesan Safe Environment process.
    • Excellent communication and presentation skills, combined with knowledge of catechetical methodology in accordance with Magisterial Documents on Catechesis.
    • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Demonstrated competence in theology, catechetics, program coordination, catechist development, and application of age‑appropriate teaching methods, communication, administration, facilitation, research, supervision, and coaching skills.

    Education, Training, and/or

    Experience:

    • BA in Theology/Faith Formation/Catechesis, Religious Education, or related field.
    • or two to five years of successful parish experience coordinating a total parish faith formation program and demonstrated competence in theology and catechetics.
