Summary: Under direct supervision, the incumbent provides assistance to teachers in a diverse classroom environment by supplying materials and handouts to special education students, working with individual or groups on special projects or assignments, demonstrating skills and techniques, communicating with parents regarding specific concerns, providing input to lesson plans and daily activities, photocopying materials, and preparing classrooms for various activities. The role also includes monitoring students on playgrounds and in the cafeteria.
EssentialFunctions
- Work with special education students individually or in groups on projects such as academic, social, emotional, functional, language, and behavior skills and activities of daily living. Demonstrate skills and techniques to aid student learning. Monitor student behavior and enforce school and classroom standards and policies.
- Assist special needs students with feeding, toileting, physical activities, instructions, behavior management, and use of adaptive equipment. Monitor and analyze reading and/or mathematics assessment data to plan instruction.
- Maintain discipline by monitoring behavior and taking appropriate action, including issuing warnings and formal notices. Prepare incident documentation.
- Monitor student safety on playground, cafeteria, and during recess; report incidents. Accompany students to library, playground, cafeteria, and buses.
- Prepare classrooms for activities, set up tables and chairs, hand out materials, and perform cleanup after activities.
- Communicate with parents regarding progress and concerns, interpreting communication between teachers and parents as needed.
- Copy and prepare educational materials, assist teachers in planning and coordinating lesson plans.
- Perform other duties as required.
- High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) prior to hire.
- Must receive CPR certification within thirty days of hire date.
- For all Title I schools:
Completion of 60 college credit hours, Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university, or successful completion of the Arizona State approved paraprofessional test.
- Minimum six months experience working with children in a learning environment.
- Demonstrating child development theories.
- Knowing basic mathematical concepts.
- Using typical classroom activities.
- Working with children.
- Understanding special needs of students.
- Demonstrating appropriate techniques and procedures.
- Facilitating group activities in a learning environment.
- Reviewing completed work assignments.
- Preparing classroom for various activities.
- Reading and following lesson plans.
- Applying school rules, policies, and procedures.
- Engaging and encouraging communication skills with supervisors, staff, and students.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
The working environment may occasionally expose employees to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
