Summary

The ESS Resource Teacher's basic function is to support an inclusion environment and work with students individually, in small groups, and within their own classroom. The ESS Teacher collaborates with classroom teachers, school psychologist, and other staff. This teacher adapts curriculum, serves as a liaison with resources, and provides assessments and interventions based upon testing and observation. The Teacher serves as an important team member, designing individualized Education Plans (IEPs) to personalize learning goals and make modifications and accommodations for each student.

The ESS Teacher is expected to carry out duties and responsibilities under the supervision and guidance of the school principal, assistant principal, and/or teacher on special assignment.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Implementation of Instructional Program:
  • Teach students individually, in a group, and within their own classroom.
  • Develop or adapt materials and teaching strategies.
  • Assess students with long or short-term learning difficulties.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, psychologist, and others to identify student needs and define appropriate curriculum-based activities.
  • Participate in the School Based Problem Solving Team to enact interventions for student progress.
  • Develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each special education student.
  • Review the IEP with the student's parents, administrators, and classroom teacher.
  • Design and teach appropriate curricula, assign work geared toward each student's needs and abilities, and evaluate homework and assignment progress.
  • Use patience and best practices to motivate students, respecting differences and employing culturally sensitive learning interventions.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records and prepare required reports.
  • Meet with administrators and parents to inform them of student progress.
  • Provide suggestions for home learning.
  • Assist students in developing emotionally, socially acceptable behavior, and daily living skills to prepare for increased learning and maturity.
  • Prepare and implement the IEP according to state/national guidelines.
  • Complete and submit substitute evaluation forms through the principal to HR.
  • Supervision of Students:
    • Provide a classroom environment that protects the health, safety and welfare of all students.
    • Implement an assertive discipline approach in all classrooms.
    • Share responsibility with administrators for adequate student supervision.
  • School Operations:
    • Assist in maintaining student records, including attendance and cumulative folders.
    • Share responsibility for caring for equipment and instructional materials assigned or allocated to the classroom, and maintain up-to-date inventory lists.
  • Participation in In-Service Programs:
    • Participate in scheduled in-service workshops during the normal workday; substitutes or administrators will supervise during participation.
    • Non-reimbursed in-service programs do not require teachers to stay past the normal workday.
    • Attend and participate in scheduled meetings at the unit school, not to exceed two hours per month beyond the normal workday; meetings may not be scheduled for Friday afternoons except in emergencies.
    • Participate yearly in development of in-service programs/workshops selected by the REA.
  • Interaction with Parents:
    • Maintain positive, professional relationships with parents.
    • Communicate with parents regarding academic progress and student behavior.
    • Attend at least two scheduled evening parent-teacher conferences.
    • Attend at least two parent-teacher functions beyond conferences;
      Open House may count as one.
  • Interaction with Staff:
    • Conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the effective operation of the District.
Education Requirements

bachelor's degree or higher

Licenses or Certifications
  • Valid Arizona Teacher Certification
  • Arizona Endorsement Subject Specific
  • Special Education Certification
  • Appropriately Certified
  • Fingerprint Clearance Card
Experience

One year experience teaching in an ESS classroom preferred.

Working Conditions

The working environment is the normal classroom setting.

Terms of Employment

Nine-month year, Certified Salary Schedule, employee benefits in accordance with Board policies.

Evaluation

Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Board policy on evaluation of certified staff.
