Saint Mary's Catholic High School is seeking a full-time, in-house substitute teacher. The ideal candidate will model the Catholic faith, create an engaging and positive learning environment, and build positive school and community relationships. A bachelor’s degree in any field is required to apply for a substitute certificate.
Purpose and ScopeUnder the supervision of the Principal and the Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction, the substitute teacher will assume responsibility for leadership and management of the grades or classes assigned, maintain detailed records, establish positive school‑community relationships, continue professional development, and perform any other job‑related tasks deemed necessary and assigned by the principal.
Essential Job Functions Strives to achieve the goals of Catholic education:- Embraces and models the Catholic philosophy of education.
- Promotes and lives gospel values and Catholic moral teaching; upholds doctrinal teachings.
- Articulates and demonstrates Catholic living by example.
- Participates in faith development activities provided by the school.
- Prepares the classroom for class activities.
- Communicates daily and unit objectives as given by the classroom teacher.
- Manages student behavior by establishing and enforcing rules in accordance with school policies.
- Applies appropriate disciplinary measures when necessary.
- Follows procedures and communication outlined in the daily substitute instruction manual.
- Maintains cooperative relations with all members of the school community; promotes respectful relationships.
- Aware of their role as a Catholic teacher and minister of the faith and its impact on the community.
- Cooperates with and helps promote various curricular and co‑curricular programs.
- Attends and actively participates in faculty meetings and in‑services.
- Performs additional duties as assigned or required by the administration.
- Attends diocesan‑sponsored in‑services.
- Participates in the process of continuous school improvement.
- Maintains personal professional development records.
Performs any other job‑related tasks deemed necessary and/or assigned by the principal.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required- Demonstrates personal self‑discipline; adaptable and flexible in routine and unexpected situations.
- Employs good judgment in daily encounters; uses verbal and written language correctly.
- Displays an appropriate sense of humor.
- Understands good teaching techniques and child psychology.
- Maintains appropriate grooming and dress as stated in the faculty handbook.
Ten‑month employee (paid in 12‑month contract), full‑time, salaried. A schedule of mandatory days and extra responsibilities is provided prior to the start of a new school year.
Minimum Qualification- Practicing Roman Catholic preferred.
- Willing to make a public Profession of Faith if Catholic; if non‑Catholic, willing to support Catholic teachings and philosophy.
- Hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent to procure an AZ Substitute Certificate.
- Certified by the Arizona State Department of Education as a substitute teacher.
- Received Safe Environment Training and signed the Code of Conduct; AZ Fingerprint clearance completed.
