The Thunderbird School of Global Management (TSGM) is currently seeking a service-oriented individual to join our dynamic Advising team. The Thunderbird Academic Success Advisor, Sr. utilizes holistic academic advising and support strategies; this position supports undergraduate students in making timely progress toward a degree. They will work as part of a team to increase persistence, retention and graduation rates. The Academic Success Advisor, Sr.

acts as a key contributor to promoting and supporting student retention and graduation and advises students in making timely progress toward degree completion through a range of in-person and virtual academic counseling and support strategies. This position is for experienced individuals with advanced training in academic advising and robust experience in student success activities and performs consistently as a role model to peers.

This position is Monday-Friday 8AM-5PM with occasional nights and weekends and is located at ASU's Downtown Phoenix campus. The opportunity for some hybrid and alternative work schedules is offered, as the business need allows.

Position Salary Range: $48,600 - $56,000; to commensurate with education and experience

Essential Duties:
  • Provides individual and group academic advising and/or interacts with students in support of academic success.
  • Works collaboratively and collegially with academic unit and services throughout the university to facilitate comprehensive student support.
  • Monitors student academic progress and program effectiveness using a variety of technology-based tools (such as degree progress, customer relationship management, and analytics software/tools), and the application of retention focused strategies, and relevant advising/student development/engagement theories.
  • Maintains an openness to new and developing tools utilized across the University to aid in student success and excellent service.
  • Able to learn and use multiple systems at same time (such as student record databases, customer relationship management systems, degree progress tools, appointment systems, analytics software/tools).
  • Shares feedback and insight regarding technology systems and their daily use.
  • Utilizes collegial interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively in person, writing, and by phone; establishes and maintains effective professional working relationships.
  • Proactively monitors student academic performance; addresses, responds to, and works to resolve student concerns, questions, or issues; collaborates closely with students to identify all academic options including, but not limited to: degrees, tutoring, counseling, career services, success coaches, extracurricular activities, study abroad program(s), research, and internships; supports and provides counsel to students in selection of options best suited to the student's goals, interests, and skills.
  • Acts as a college/department/school representative to current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and external groups on issues related to academic success; attends and/or presents at orientation or recruiting events/activities/workshops.
  • Works to ensure ongoing satisfaction for students with their program and degree progress, provides follow up to ensure satisfaction with and effectiveness of services, and utilizes a variety of university data and programmatic direction to promote student academic success.
  • Regularly monitors assessment resources to refine and build effective practices.
  • Possesses a clear understanding of the larger picture of the college and/or departmental processes and expectations around the utilization of these tools and how they impact student experience.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of current issues and theories in public and higher education and college advising.
  • Thinks critically and problem solves both independently and as part of a group.
  • Provides effective student service activities and de-escalation techniques.
  • Recognizes complex issues and alerts leadership; may provide suggestions in response.
