Job Description

Position: Instructional Assistant/Personal Care – Special Education

Duration: 9 months, 6.5 hours/day (Aug 3, 2026 – May 27, 2027)

Grade: 16, $16.99/hour

Type: Non-Interim

Education:

High school diploma or GED

Purpose:

To provide support to the instructional program by working one‑on‑one with special‑needs students, following educational and behavioral plans, and reporting students’ daily activities. This position reports to the Teacher and/or Site Administrator.

Essential Functions

  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
  • Assist medically fragile, physically disabled, or developmentally delayed students with personal hygiene (e.g., diapering, tube feeding).
  • Communicate with teachers and health‑care professionals (Speech Therapist, PT, OT, etc.) to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
  • Document daily activities—including behavior, completed assignments, on/off task times—for daily logs and hourly reports.
  • Evaluate situations involving staff, students, parents, or the public to provide action or referral.
  • Implement behavioral plans under teacher supervision for students with behavior disorders.
  • Maintain manual and electronic files for reference and regulatory compliance.
  • Model conversation, manners, clean‑up activities, listening, job skills, and everyday interactions to demonstrate appropriate social behavior.
  • Monitor student schedules and behavior plans to maintain a safe, positive learning environment.
  • Provide instruction under teacher supervision (math, science, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills, job skills) to implement IEP goals.
  • Remain with the student at all times to ensure safety, remove or de‑escalate situations if necessary.
  • Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.

Other Functions

Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Responsibility

Work under direct supervision using standardized procedures; lead, guide, and/or coordinate others; continually impact the organization’s services.

Work Environment

Physical demands include significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. Typical job composition: 50% sitting, 25% walking, 25% standing. Exposure to risk of injury or illness in a clean environment.

Experience
