Location and Schedule

Gate Way Community College.

Full Time. Regular. Monday–Friday, 30 hours per week. Some evenings and weekends may be required.

Work calendar: 9 months.

Job Summary

Provide comprehensive counseling services, instruction, and leadership. Deliver personal, academic, career, and crisis counseling, teach counseling courses, serve on committees, develop workshops, and support student success initiatives. Lead emergency situations and contribute to overall counseling services improvement.

Essential Functions
  • Teach FYE, CAP, and CPD courses; prepare syllabi, lesson plans, and instructional materials; provide instructional support and hold regular office hours.
  • Deliver counseling services through scheduled appointments and walk‑in availability, addressing personal, academic, and career concerns; provide crisis intervention and support with leadership in emergency situations; consult with faculty, staff, and administrators; maintain accurate documentation.
  • Develop and present workshops on counseling, academic success, and personal development topics; build partnerships with community agencies and resources.
  • Participate in campus and district committees, special projects, program initiatives, curriculum development and faculty/staff development.
  • Collaborate with counseling colleagues and campus teams to support a student‑centered approach.
  • Provide leadership in assigned programs and contribute to administration and continuous improvement of counseling services.
  • Engage in faculty development activities, including orientation, evaluations, and ongoing professional growth.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Master’s degree or higher in counseling from a regionally accredited institution; 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of graduate work including courses in counseling theories and techniques, personality/theory, testing, group counseling, career counseling, individual assessment, and practicum/supervised practice.
  • Completed either a practicum, supervised practice, or internship in counseling (must have completed coursework in at least five of the first six areas; adequacy resolved within one year; area seven must be completed before hire).
  • Complete Springboard to Success training during first semester post‑hire.
  • Desired Qualifications
    • Experience teaching in a community college, university, or K‑12 setting.
    • Experience as a counselor within a community college.
    • Experience intervening with mental health crises to assess and facilitate community referrals.
    • Experience with retention programs and services, preferably in a community college setting.
    • Experience working with first‑generation students, diverse populations, or student success initiatives/programs/services.
    • One year full‑time relevant MCCCD experience during the previous two years (internal candidates only).
    Special Working Conditions
    • Required to travel or be assigned to all Gate Way locations.
