Position Summary / Purpose
Grand Canyon University (GCU) maintains relationships with nonprofit organizations identified by the IRS as 501(c)(3) by virtue of their charitable programs. The collective mission of 501(c)(3) organizations in the Phoenix Valley is to improve the quality of life for community residents or to solve particular problems related to those residents’ needs. GCU maintains a partnership with Victory Schools located at 3535 N.
63rd Avenue, Phoenix, AZ, 85033. Victory Schools empower K-12 students, including those with autism, ensuring they receive essential and equitable educational opportunities in order to thrive and achieve success. The CSLP student worker’s work schedule is dependent on the hours of operations and needs of Victory Schools; however, CSLP student workers may not work more than 20 hours per week during the academic year (i.e., fall/spring).
This position has been reviewed and approved as Community Service as defined by 34 CFR 675.2(b). FWS‑CSLP positions require applicants to complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be reviewed for FWS‑eligibility and awarded FWS.
- Works with students individually or in groups on special projects or assignments including spelling, reading, mathematics, comprehension levels and memorization of emergency information.
- Demonstrates skills and techniques in order to aid in student learning.
- Monitors student behavior and enforces school and classroom standards and policies.
- Monitors students and ensures safety on the playground, cafeteria area before school, during breakfast and lunch, and during recess.
- Reports any unusual incidents or injury to school administration.
- Accompanies students from classrooms to other areas including the library, playground, cafeteria and buses to ensure orderly behavior.
- Maintains discipline by monitoring student behavior and taking appropriate action.
- Prepares incident documents including disciplinary actions and documentation for unusual incidents.
- Monitors student progress in reading and/or mathematics.
- Copies and prepares educational materials as needed.
- Prepares classrooms for activities including setting up tables and chairs and handing out materials.
- Performs cleanup after activities, picking up toys and trash, washing tables and chairs and rearranging furniture.
- Communicates with parents regarding progress and concerns including improvements in specific academic areas, truancy, and behavioral problems.
- Interprets communications between teachers and parents when necessary.
- Assists teachers in planning and coordinating lesson plans by sharing ideas and providing feedback from the students.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Passion and willingness to help others succeed.
- Strong ethics, integrity, and sense of responsibility.
- Previous mentoring experience (a plus).
- Ability to speak a second language (a plus).
- Reliable transportation.
- Enrollment at GCU as a full‑time student in a bachelor’s or master’s program.
- Maintain a 2.0 GPA (Bachelor) or 3.0 GPA (Master).
- Good financial and academic standing with the University.
- Meet eligibility requirements for student employment, including FAA SFAS completion.
