Purpose Statement The Library Media Technician provides support to the instructional program with responsibilities for maintaining the library collection at school sites, identifying age-appropriate resources for students and teachers, selecting materials to support classroom instruction, and performing clerical functions related to collection, processing, circulation, maintenance, and inventory of library materials and/or textbooks.

Essential Functions
  • Assist teachers, students, staff and administrators in identifying resource materials for classroom use.
  • Evaluate books and periodicals for retention, repair damaged materials, and recommend retirement of items to ensure library availability.
  • Maintain materials inventory (books, hardware/software, media equipment, etc.) for up-to-date reference and availability.
  • Monitor student activities to maintain a safe learning environment.
  • Participate in meetings, in-service trainings, and workshops to stay informed about job requirements.
  • Perform circulation activities (check-in/check-out, overdue items, disposal of damaged materials) to manage availability of items.
  • Process new student library cards, notices of missing/damaged/overdue items to provide access and secure losses reimbursement.
  • Process library materials (barcode, cataloging, shelving, reporting) to provide required materials to students and staff.
  • Repair books and materials to ensure continued availability; respond to inquiries from students, staff, and parents regarding resources and status of items.
Other Functions
  • Order supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Perform other related duties to ensure efficient and effective operation of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Skills:

operate standard office equipment and software applications; prepare and maintain accurate records.

Knowledge: basic math (fractions, percents, ratios); read manuals, write documents, present information; understand complex, multi-step instructions. Knowledge areas include library practices and computer/internet operations.

Abilities: schedule activities, gather data, use job-related equipment; work with others in diverse circumstances; interpret data and operate equipment using standard methods; establish effective working relationships.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include working under direct supervision with standardized routines; may lead or coordinate others; may utilize resources from other units; opportunity to impact the organization s services.

Work Environment

Physical demands include occasional lifting/carrying, pushing/pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. Typical distribution: 20% sitting, 40% walking, 40% standing. Environment may include exposure to risk of injury and/or illness in a clean atmosphere.

Education & Clearances

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Equivalency:

Certificates and Licenses: Criminal Background Clearance;
Valid Arizona DPS Level I IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
