SUMMARYThe Safety Assistant maintains a safe learning and working environment for all students and staff on school campuses by monitoring activities and addressing safety concerns, and protects and secures all District property at the campus level.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Monitors campus activities and events; upholds all campus and District rules and regulations.
- Monitors and assesses campus buildings and grounds to ensure that only students with valid IDs or authorized persons are on campus and students do not leave campus grounds without authorization.
- Builds positive relationships with students and staff; supports a positive campus climate.
- Escorts disruptive students from classroom to Administration office, supervises students awaiting intervention, and deescalates physical and verbal altercations.
- Informs Dispatch/Base, Safety Assistant, Campus Safety Supervisor or Safety Assistant, Senior of campus activities.
- May be required to assist safety teams at other District sites as needed.
- Participates in mandatory District/Local in-service training programs.
- Supports the relationship between the Phoenix Union High School District and the public by demonstrating courteous and professional behavior when interacting with students, parents, visitors, and school staff; maintains absolute confidentiality of work‑related issues, client records, and school information; follows Governing Board Policies; performs all other related duties as required or assigned.
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines: Must hold a high school diploma or GED equivalent; must have some previous experience in security or related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must be at least 21 years of age.
License and Certification Requirements: Must possess a valid Arizona State Driver's License; must hold current Red Cross first aid and CPR certificates at start of employment or obtain them within the first 60 days; must possess an active Arizona Department of Public Safety IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card or obtain one within the first 90 workdays.

- Ability to maintain necessary records.
- Skill in understanding, explaining, and applying relevant rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to provide excellent customer experiences, including interacting tactfully and courteously with the public.

- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to use initiative within organizational policies, procedures and guidelines.
Work is performed throughout school campuses and requires exposure to various weather conditions. May be exposed to potential physical harm, contagious illnesses, and bodily fluids. Physical ability to perform all essential functions is required.
