Purpose Statement

The role of Teacher – Special Education is to provide support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher responsible for developing students with special needs to succeed in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living; supervising students; developing lesson plans; delivering group and individual instruction; collaborating with staff; and responding to parents on instructional progress.

Essential Functions
  • Administers developmental testing programs and subject‑specific assessments to assess student competency levels and develop individual learning plans.
  • Provides first aid to medically fragile children under supervision.
  • Advises parents on student progress and establishes communication plans.
  • Assesses student progress toward objectives and provides feedback.
  • Collaborates with instructional staff, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes.
  • Counsels students to improve performance, health, problem‑solving, and personal issues.
  • Demonstrates pedagogical approaches engaging learners.
  • Differentiates classroom work to meet individualized learning programs.
  • Directs assistant teachers, student teachers, paraprofessionals, volunteers, and student workers.
  • Instructs students to improve academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills.
  • Maintains confidential and non‑confidential records per guidelines.
  • Manages student behavior to provide a safe learning environment.
  • Monitors students in various educational settings.
  • Orders supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Participates in meetings such as IEPs and staff meetings.
  • Participates on PLC team reviewing data and instructional practices.
  • Prepares written materials to document student progress.
  • Reports health and safety issues to administrators and agencies.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Responds to inquiries from teachers, parents, administrators.
  • Serves as case manager for special education students, managing IEPs.
  • Supports classroom teachers with curriculum and individual plans.
Other Functions
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Skills: Apply assessment instruments; operate office equipment and relevant software; prepare and maintain accurate records.

Knowledge: Algebra/geometry; reading technical information; understanding policies, regulations, and laws; child development stages; behavioral management strategies; instructional methods.

Abilities: Schedule activities; gather and analyze data; collaborate with diverse individuals; maintain confidentiality; exhibit tact and patience; work flexible hours.

Responsibilities

Work under limited supervision using standardized practices; direct others in a small work unit; utilize resources from other units.

Work Environment

Physical demands include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. Typical job includes 10% sitting, 50% walking, 40% standing. Minimal temperature variation; exposure to risk of injury and illness.

Experience

Job related experience is desired.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in a job‑related area.

  • Open Criminal Background Clearance (or ability to obtain district sponsored training)
