Position: Production Trainee (West Phoenix Power Plant)

Summary

APS has an immediate opening for a Production Trainee at our West Phoenix Power Plant
. Upon successful completion of the Production Trainee Program (maximum six months), you will be promoted to the next classification and continue progressing toward becoming a fully qualified Gas & Oil Power Plant Auxiliary Operator
.

What You’ll Do As a Production Trainee
  • Support the safe, efficient, and cost‑effective production of electric energy.
  • Supply and prepare equipment, tools, materials, and protective devices needed for various jobs.
  • Haul and position materials and parts; assist as needed on tasks.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and a forklift.
  • Perform digging and back filling using hand tools.
  • Spend the first 180 days split between classroom training and fieldwork (e.g., helper or laborer‑type duties).
Program Overview

Employees progress through the classification line over 1.5 years. The program is structured to give you the skills and experience needed to become a fully qualified Auxiliary Operator. An Auxiliary Operator supports power plant operations by monitoring, operating, and maintaining auxiliary equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable electricity production. The Auxiliary Operator takes field readings, identifies and corrects equipment issues, performs basic maintenance and water testing, follows strict safety procedures, and coordinates closely with the Control Operator during normal operations, startups, shutdowns, and emergencies at the plant.

Location & Placement

Selected candidates will be based at the West Phoenix Power Plant and may be scheduled for training rotations at any of the following locations:

  • Redhawk Power Plant — Arlington, AZ
  • Ocotillo Power Plant — Tempe, AZ
  • Sundance Power Plant — Coolidge, AZ
  • Yucca Power Plant — Yuma, AZ
Work Schedule

The work schedule for this position is a 12‑hour rotating shift as defined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement; LOMA dated December 8, 2015.

Production Trainee Program Requirements
  • Must successfully complete all required training for Production Trainee within 6 months of hire.
  • Reasonable and necessary overtime will be required.
  • Production Trainee will report to Operations based on projected plant needs.
Minimum Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be eighteen (18) years or older.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Pass both the EEI mechanical aptitude test (MASS) and the EEI operations aptitude test (POSS).
  • Must live within reasonable distance (one (1) hour) of headquarters.
  • Pass a panel interview.
  • Pass APS physical exam (drug test, etc.).
  • This position requires working with aerial equipment, which has weight restrictions of 300lbs or less.
Major Accountabilities
  • Complies with safety and environmental rules and regulations.
  • Complies with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Successfully completes all assigned training per the training plan.
  • Hauls and positions material and parts. Assists as needed.
  • Operates hand tools, power tools and forklift.
  • Digs and back fills with hand tools.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
