About the PositionAs a Traffic Engineer in the Traffic Engineering Branch, you will lead the planning, design, analysis, and review of a variety of traffic engineering projects. You will apply advanced technical expertise to improve traffic flow, enhance roadway safety, and support data-driven design decisions across Maricopa County's transportation network.
In this role, you will prepare and review complex traffic engineering studies and designs, such as traffic signal layouts, intersection improvements, signing and pavement marking plans, and safety enhancement projects. You will also provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and consultants, while coordinating with internal and external partners to deliver projects aligned with MCDOT's goals.
This position is ideal for experienced Traffic Engineering professionals passionate about applying innovative traffic engineering practices to shape safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation solutions for Maricopa County.

Two years of civil engineering experience
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Arizona State Board of Technical Registration, or by the technical board of another state, with the ability to obtain Arizona registration within six months of employment
Successful candidates must currently possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Arizona Driver's license by the time of hire

Experience in reviewing engineering design plans
Experience in interpreting and analyzing data and writing technical reports
Knowledge of traffic engineering practices and procedures
Familiar with the latest versions of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets (AASHTO), and National Highway and roadway design guidelines and standards
Experience with traffic modeling software, including Synchro
Experience using Micro Station/AutoCAD
Prepare and review traffic engineering plans for projects of high complexity, including traffic signals, pavement marking and signing, intersection improvements, and low-cost safety improvement projects, in accordance with Maricopa County and National standards and guidelines
Develop complex project design concepts and criteria, review complex traffic engineering studies and analysis, and make recommendations for countermeasures, exercising engineering judgement
Supervise and review the work of staff, contractors, or industry specialists/consultants as needed; lead the quality control process in the design and review phases of traffic engineering projects, including reviewing engineering reports, project plans, cost estimates, and special provisions for projects
Compile, interpret, and analyze volume, speed, crash, delay, and queuing data, and conduct analysis using Synchro and other tools
Deliver projects focused on achieving the Division goals and objectives within the schedules and budgets
Meet with staff at various levels, including leadership, engineers, contractors, and the public, to clearly communicate traffic engineering alternatives and mitigation measures
