Hardware Engineer, Systems Engineer
West-Com Nurse Call Systems, Inc. is an established healthcare technology manufacturer building the next generation of intelligent clinical communication. Our systems connect patients with their caregivers in hospitals across North America, and we're now developing a new platform that brings edge AI, advanced audio capture, and real-time clinical integration directly into the patient room. This is a ground-floor opportunity to lead the hardware architecture of a product that will set the direction of our company for the next decade.
Aboutthe Role
As our Senior Hardware Engineer, you'll own the electrical and hardware architecture of a new intelligent clinical device — from PCB design and component selection through enclosure integration, thermal management, and design for medical-grade reliability. You'll drive board bring-up, work hands‑on with prototypes, and write the bring‑up firmware and validation code needed to prove the hardware works.
You’ll also serve as the technical bridge to our outsourced DSP/audio and ML/AI engineering partners — making sure their work integrates cleanly into the platform you’ve designed, and that knowledge transfers cleanly into our internal team.
LocationThis role is based at our Arizona office in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area — one of the fastest‑growing embedded systems and semiconductor engineering hubs in the country. The Phoenix metro is home to major operations from TSMC, Intel, NXP, Microchip Technology, ON Semiconductor, and Raytheon, putting you in the middle of a thriving hardware engineering community.

We offer a hybrid work arrangement with on‑site presence required during critical development phases — board bring‑up, prototype integration, and partner knowledge‑transfer sessions. During steady‑state development, a flexible hybrid schedule is available. Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates currently located outside of Arizona.
Responsibilities- Own the hardware architecture and PCB design for room‑level edge devices and floor‑level processing infrastructure
- Lead component selection, schematic capture, and PCB layout review for mixed‑signal designs incorporating audio capture, edge AI compute, and network connectivity
- Drive board bring‑up, debug, and validation — scope, logic analyzer, JTAG, protocol analyzers
- Own thermal design, power architecture, and EMC/EMI considerations for medical‑grade reliability
- Write bring‑up firmware, board support code, and hardware validation tests in C/C++
- Integrate the audio DSP subsystem and edge AI module (Jetson‑class) at the hardware level — clocking, I2S/TDM routing, signal integrity
- Serve as the primary technical liaison with outsourced DSP/audio and ML/AI engineering partners — reviewing their work, managing integration, and ensuring knowledge transfers to our internal team
- Collaborate with our software team on hardware abstraction, drivers, and the firmware‑to‑application interface
- Drive the product through UL/CSA, FCC, and applicable FDA regulatory processes
- Support the manufacturing transition: DFM, DFT, and working with contract manufacturers through pilot and production builds
- 7+ years of hardware/electrical engineering experience designing embedded products, with at least 3 years as a technical lead or architect
- Strong PCB design experience — schematic capture and layout review for mixed‑signal, multi‑layer boards (Altium, KiCad, or equivalent)
- Hands‑on board bring‑up and hardware debug — scope, logic analyzer, JTAG, protocol analyzers
- Experience designing around ARM‑based AI edge platforms (NVIDIA Jetson family or comparable) and integrating them onto custom carrier boards
- Solid understanding of audio capture hardware — codecs, microphone interfaces, I2S/TDM routing, clocking, and signal integrity
- Far‑field microphone array design and acoustic considerations
- Familiarity with Yocto or Buildroot Linux platforms from the hardware integration side
- DFM/DFT experience and working with contract manufacturers
- Familiarity with hospital IT infrastructure (HL7/FHIR, clinical network security, HIPAA technical safeguards)
