The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is currently seeking a Health & Safety Director to lead company-wide occupational health, safety, and environmental protection programs tailored to project-based field work, remediation sites, laboratories, and client facilities. This role ensures regulatory compliance, reduces project and corporate risk, advises project teams and clients on EHS and hazardous materials management, and embeds practical safety solutions into proposals, project planning, and operations.

The position can be performed remotely from in or near a major U.S. metropolitan city. The position involves infrequent travel to attend recruiting events and meet Tetra Tech team members.

Essential Job Functions:

* Develop, implement, and maintain an EHS management system tailored for consulting/project work (field sampling, remediation, construction support, lab activities, drilling, confined-space entry, vehicle operations, etc.).

* Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT, state environmental agencies), industry best practices, and client requirements; maintain permits, regulatory notifications, and reporting protocols.

* Support project lifecycle: review scopes of work, perform pre-project risk assessments and job hazard analyses (JHAs/JSAs), specify required PPE, monitoring, and controls for bids and proposals.

* Lead incident and near-miss investigations on projects and corporate operations; perform root-cause analysis, implement corrective/preventive actions, and communicate lessons learned to project teams and clients.

* Oversee hazardous materials and waste handling programs (RCRA/TSDF interfaces, waste profiling, chain-of-custody), decontamination protocols, and emergency spill/response planning.

* Manage occupational health programs relevant to field staff and lab personnel, including medical surveillance, exposure monitoring (air, noise, chemical), respirator programs, and return-to-work coordination.

* Design and deliver role-specific training: HAZWOPER (e.g., 40/24/8/8-hour refreshers), confined-space entry, fall protection, respirator fit-testing, sampling safety, driving safety, and client-specific orientation programs.

* Conduct routine site and lab safety audits, pre-mobilization inspections, and subcontractor EHS prequalification and oversight.

* Integrate safety and environmental controls into project design reviews (remediation systems, temporary works), and advise engineering teams on constructability with safe-work considerations.

* Maintain relationships with regulators, insurance carriers, contracted emergency response teams, and third-party auditors.

* Provide EHS input for proposals and client communications; support technical writing for safety sections of proposals, work plans, and health & safety plans (HASPs).

* Lead, mentor, and develop the EHS team and field safety champions; set measurable goals and support career development.

* Manage EHS budget, insurance/claims interfaces, and initiatives to lower project risk and insurance costs.

* Promote a proactive safety culture across office and field staff through visible leadership and incentives.

Required Qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or related technical field.

* 10+ years of EHS experience with at least 5 years in a leadership role within environmental consulting, remediation, construction, or related project-based services.

* Direct experience with field operations: environmental site assessments (Phase I/II), remediation, drilling, trenching, confined space, and/or sampling programs.

* Strong working knowledge of OSHA standards (including HAZWOPER), EPA hazardous-waste regulations (RCRA/CERCLA basics), DOT hazardous materials transport, and common state environmental program requirements.

* Demonstrated experience preparing and implementing HASPs, JHAs, permit-required confined space programs, and respiratory protection programs.
