About This Position
The Planning & Development Department (PDD) guides the physical development of the city by preserving historic sites, planning where construction can occur, and ensuring safe building and infrastructure. The process is governed through development and enforcement of city codes and ordinances.
PDD is currently seeking an Electrical Plans Engineer to review and examine electrical construction plans for compliance with adopted codes and ordinances. The role provides technical and review assistance to Electrical Plans Examiners I and II, as well as to architects, engineers, contractors, and field inspectors, to resolve complex code issues. Work includes interpreting electrical plans, solving unique code interpretation and design problems, and assisting in the development of electrical construction codes.
The position is performed under the general direction of the Major Commercial Team Leader.
- Knowledge of electrical system design for building construction and ability to objectively interpret and consistently apply code requirements.
- Knowledge of NEC and other construction codes.
- Knowledge of standard electrical construction materials.
- Ability to read and interpret building construction plans.
- Ability to apply code requirements using professional judgment.
- Pay Range: $ to $ annually.

- Three years of experience in the building construction industry related to electrical work and electrical engineering.
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substitutes.
- By the end of probation, must meet the following two requirements:
- Registered Professional Engineer/Electrical (PE) in the State of Arizona.
- ICC Electrical Plans Examiner (E3) OR IAEI Electrical Inspector/Plan Review.
- All finalists are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Employees must be physically capable of operating vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license, and maintain an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Five or more years of experience in electrical system design in building construction.
- Five or more years of experience reviewing electrical construction plans.
- Experience using construction permit software.
- Experience with Electronic Plan Review Software.
- Experience preparing and interpreting building construction plans.
- Professional registration in the State of Arizona as a Structural or Civil Professional Engineer (PE).
