Preconstruction Project Engineer
We are seeking a detail-oriented Preconstruction Project Engineer to support our mechanical and sheet metal teams during the preconstruction phase. The role focuses on estimating, design coordination, and constructability reviews for HVAC, piping, plumbing, and sheet metal systems. The ideal candidate will produce accurate takeoffs, coordinate with design and field teams, develop estimates and value engineering options, and help ensure projects are viable, compliant, and aligned with client requirements before construction begins.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs and material lists for HVAC, mechanical, sheet metal, piping, and plumbing systems using drawings, specifications, and models.
- Develop accurate cost estimates, budgets, and bid packages for preconstruction activities; identify and document assumptions and clarifications.
- Review and coordinate design documents with engineers, architects, and subcontractors to identify conflicts, scope gaps, and constructability issues.
- Create and manage scope, pricing breakdowns, and bid comparisons; evaluate subcontractor proposals and provide recommendations.
- Participate in value engineering exercises to optimize system performance and cost, while maintaining code compliance and owner requirements.
- Support BIM coordination efforts by extracting quantities, validating model content, and communicating conflicts or missing information to design teams.
- Prepare material takeoffs and procurement summaries to support lead times and project scheduling.
- Assist in developing proposals, technical narratives, and presentations for clients and internal stakeholders.
- Collaborate with project managers and field personnel to bring preconstruction assumptions into the project execution plan and handover.
- Maintain accurate estimating databases, historical cost records, and lessons-learned documentation to improve future estimates.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
- 3+ years of experience in preconstruction, estimating, or project engineering for mechanical/HVAC/sheet metal systems preferred.
- Proven experience with takeoffs and quantity estimating for HVAC, piping, plumbing, and sheet metal.
- Familiarity with BIM tools (Revit Navisworks) and experience extracting quantities from models is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems, ductwork fabrication, piping materials, and installation practices.
- Proficiency with estimating software and Microsoft Office (Excel skills for pricing and quantity worksheets required).
- Excellent communication skills for coordinating with design teams, subcontractors, and clients.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Knowledge of codes, standards, and construction practices relevant to mechanical systems (e.g., ASHRAE, SMACNA) is a plus.
Benefits
- Competitive Base Salary: $70k - $90k DOE
- Health/Dental/Vision
- Life Insurance
- AD&D
- Short Term and Long Term Disability
- 401(k)
