Position Overview

HDR is seeking a Geotechnical Business Class Lead for the AZ/NM area. The role involves leading the geotechnical practice, representing HDR’s geotechnical engineering to clients, and building relationships across business groups to promote technical excellence and strategic growth.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Coordinate, monitor, and improve technical competencies of Geotechnical Business Class staff to meet project demands, client needs, and market drivers, in line with Geotechnical Business Class strategies.
  • Select, train, mentor and manage geotechnical personnel.
  • Promote the AZ/NM geotechnical practice and establish partnerships to advance innovative concepts and mitigate risks for the benefit of HDR and clients.
  • Contribute to HDR's geotechnical practice and professional discipline groups, project teams, and activities to continually improve standards and best practices, and implement effective quality assurance and quality control reviews.
  • Participate in geotechnical work strategic planning and implementation.
  • Confirm geotechnical work is planned, organized, controlled, and evaluated through proactive project management systems.
  • Drive continuous process refinement to increase technical competence, design efficiency, and product quality.
  • Function as project manager or geotechnical task lead on projects as needed, and take responsibility for production on projects.
  • Participate in project pursuits and develop marketing plans and proposals, including interviews, representing HDR to clients and coordinating pursuit activities.
  • Work proactively and collaboratively with the HDR geotechnical national business class director to align strategies and proactively drive the geotechnical practice community.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field.
  • 10 years of experience.
  • Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values.
  • Maintains a professional or engineering registration and has related technical experience.
  • Experienced in development and management of diverse teams.
  • Works cooperatively with other area business class leaders, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers on business class efforts.
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee‑owned culture.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active, or ability to obtain within 6 months, PE registration in AZ and NM.
  • Master of Science degree or higher in Engineering (Geotechnical/Geologic engineering) or equivalent level of experience.
  • 10 or more years of progressive experience in advanced engineering projects leading geotechnical design efforts for public and private clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete geotechnical investigations and analyses for foundations, embankments, slopes, excavation support and retaining structures for varied project types, including transportation clients.
  • Hands‑on expertise with subsurface investigations, field/lab testing, foundation design, slope stability, settlement, and ground improvement.
  • Experience with software such as SHAFT, LPILE, SETTLE3D, SLOPE/W, SEEP/W, Roc Science Programs, AASHTO MEPDG, GIS, and Civil 3D.
  • Active participation in professional societies (ASCE, AEG, DFI, Geo Institute of ASCE).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, technical writing ability, and the drive to thrive in a collaborative, fast‑paced environment.
  • Sufficient knowledge in soil mechanics to fully understand the technical elements and bring advanced concept solutions to bear.
  • Experience with geotechnical engineering software and its use, to analyze static, dynamic, and seismic aspects of foundation design, slope stability, settlement evaluation, and earth retention design, including numerical modeling.
