Senior Roadway Drainage Engineer (Hydrology & Hydraulics)
The AECOM Water Business Line is seeking a Senior Roadway Drainage Engineer (Hydrology & Hydraulics) to join the Phoenix, AZ office. This role focuses on roadway and highway drainage design, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling for transportation corridors, and development of storm drain, culvert, and cross-drainage systems in support of municipal and DOT infrastructure projects.
Lead hydrologic and hydraulic analysis and design for roadway drainage systems, including storm drain networks, culverts, inlets, gutter flow, spread analysis, and hydraulic grade line (HGL) evaluations along transportation corridors
This role leads the delivery of mid- to large-scale infrastructure projects while providing a clear path into a technical lead role with PM responsibilities and growth within AECOM's growing water resources practice. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, mentor junior staff, support client relationships, and contribute to business development within a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team environment.
Serve as lead engineer or discipline lead for mid- to large-scale water resources and stormwater infrastructure projects
Direct preparation and delivery of construction packages, including design drawings, specifications, cost estimates, alternatives analyses, technical memoranda, and design reports
Plan, schedule, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering projects with a focus on stormwater management systems
Perform and oversee hydrologic and hydraulic analyses specifically for roadway and highway drainage, including culvert sizing, storm drain system design, cross-drainage structures, and floodplain impacts at roadway crossings.
Lead conceptual and final design of roadway drainage infrastructure including culverts, storm drain systems, detention facilities, channels, and erosion control measures integrated with roadway profiles and grading plans.
Prepare roadway drainage plans, profiles, and details in coordination with roadway design teams using Civil 3D, ensuring compliance with DOT, county, and municipal drainage criteria.
Ensure designs incorporate erosion control measures, geosynthetics, and surface and subsurface drainage systems
Provide technical oversight, independent reviews, and approval of engineering analyses and design deliverables
Manage and coordinate multi-disciplinary project teams, including subcontractors, typically consisting of five or more team members
Mentor and provide technical direction to junior engineers and designers
Support client coordination, present design solutions, and contribute to development of project proposals and business growth initiatives

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline with 8 years of relevant professional experience
Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Arizona or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire
Preferred Qualifications
Master's in Civil Engineering or related field of study
Experience with DOT or municipal roadway drainage standards (e.g., ADOT, county public works) including inlet spacing, gutter flow, spread calculations, and storm drain hydraulic design.
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline with 10 years of relevant professional experience
Demonstrated expertise in stormwater evaluation and design, including 1D/2D hydrologic and hydraulic modeling
Proficiency with industry-standard modeling software (e.g., Open Roads Design (ORD) HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SRH-2D)
Experience leading design tasks on complex water resources or design-build projects
Strong understanding of stormwater permitting, floodplain management, and regulatory coordination
Experience developing grading, drainage, and roadway plans in coordination with CAD designers (AutoCAD Civil 3D preferred)
Proven ability to manage scope, budget, and schedule for complex engineering tasks
Experience preparing technical reports, calculation packages, and construction documentation
Demonstrated technical review and quality control oversight experience
Strong analytical skills with sound application of civil engineering design principles
