Substation Engineer
Are you an experienced Substation Engineer who enjoys leading complex projects, working directly with clients, and mentoring engineering teams? We're seeking a Substation Engineer to oversee utility and power delivery projects from initial concept through final execution.
In this role, you'll provide both technical leadership and project management expertise, helping deliver high-voltage substation projects while building strong client relationships and supporting the growth of a talented engineering team.
What You'll Do- Manage substation engineering projects from proposal development through project closeout
- Develop and manage project scope, schedules, budgets, and resource plans
- Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver quality projects on time and within budget
- Provide technical oversight for substation design, power delivery, and high-voltage engineering projects
- Serve as the primary client contact and ensure successful project delivery
- Oversee project risks, change management processes, and quality control efforts
- Support EPC projects by leading QA/QC reviews and ensuring deliverable excellence
- Mentor and develop project engineers, assistant project managers, and junior staff
- Support business development efforts through client engagement, proposals, presentations, and strategic growth initiatives
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders across project phases
- Support related transmission, distribution, communications, and system protection projects as needed
- Travel periodically for client meetings, project execution, and business development activities
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering
- 7+ years of engineering experience within utilities, power delivery, or substation projects
- 2+ years of project management experience
- Active Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification
- Strong experience with:
- Substation engineering and design
- High-voltage systems and power delivery
- Project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and risk management
- Leading cross-functional engineering teams
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project
- Excellent communication, leadership, and client-facing skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or progressing toward licensure
- Master's degree in Engineering or related field
- PMP certification
- Experience with AutoCAD and utility design software
- EPC project experience
- Knowledge of relay protection systems, communications systems, and substation controls
- Experience supporting transmission, distribution, and system protection projects
- Familiarity with environmental permitting, public involvement, and right-of-way processes

This is a hybrid position with a typical schedule of 2-3 days in the office and 2-3 days remote each week. Opportunities are available in Phoenix, Tucson, and Albuquerque. Occasional travel is required for client meetings, business development, and project site visits.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Phoenix, AZ.
Pay and Benefits:
The pay range for this position is $55.00 - $85.00/hr individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
