Cal Portland seeks a Chief Project Engineer to lead complex construction and plant engineering projects in our Engineering & Design department. You will oversee multidisciplinary design, budgeting, and execution of capital projects, ensuring alignment with safety, quality, and sustainability goals. Responsibilities include directing engineering teams and consultants, reviewing and sealing designs, managing schedules and risk, and coordinating with construction, operations, and environmental groups.

This role champions innovation, continuous improvement, and compliance while mentoring engineers and supporting Cal Portland's culture of collaboration and growth.

Responsibilities

  • Lead planning, design, and execution of major capital and plant improvement projects
  • Provide technical oversight and approval of engineering calculations, drawings, and specifications
  • Manage project scope, budget, schedule, and risk from concept through commissioning
  • Coordinate with construction, operations, environmental, and safety teams to ensure constructability and compliance
  • Select, direct, and evaluate external engineering and design consultants
  • Ensure adherence to safety standards, building codes, and environmental regulations
  • Drive innovation, value engineering, and sustainable design practices
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers and project staff
  • Prepare and present technical and project status reports to leadership
  • Support continuous improvement of engineering standards, tools, and procedures
