Job Description & How to Apply Below
  • Mechanical, plumbing, and electrical design firm, in business since 2009, headquartered in Scottsdale, AZ.
  • Projects across multiple sectors, with teams in Arizona, Texas, and Mexico.
About the Role

The Design Engineer runs the project from the kickoff call through the last RFI.

  • You own the scope, the schedule, the design direction, and the deliverables.
  • You are the client's main point of contact for your discipline.
  • You direct a designer or a small design team, review their sets, and develop their skills.
  • You work with the Principal Engineer, who validates design direction and reviews every set before it goes out.
  • The next step on this path is Team Lead, then senior roles.
What You'll Be Doing Project Initiation and Planning
  • Review the scope of work and everything received in the proposal phase: drawings, emails, site photos, prior reports.
  • Identify missing information early and build the questions and coordination items that go to the client.
  • Confirm the scope matches the proposal, and notify the business development team of any fee or scope discrepancies.
  • Complete the project start checklist with the full team, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical.
  • Run the internal kickoff with your designers and the other discipline, then the kickoff call with the client.
  • Review the preliminary schedule before the kickoff and adjust it after. If a milestone is not attainable, tell the client right away and offer alternatives.
  • Set up project activities and milestones in our project management software and keep the scheduling team updated.
  • Prepare additional service authorization descriptions and estimated hours, and submit them within 24 to 48 hours. Urgent requests go out the same day.
  • Follow up with the client on schedule confirmation and outstanding information until you get an answer.
Design Development
  • Develop the initial design direction and give designers the information they need to start.
  • Meet with the Principal Engineer to validate direction, and save the notes and recordings.
  • Submit 35% design development for mechanical and plumbing. Bring electrical forward after the 50% milestone.
  • Share the finalized direction with the design team and release them to work.
  • Review progress sets: percentage complete, equipment specs, each system individually and as a whole, and the design checklists.
  • Turn reviews around quickly enough that designers can pick up comments before the PE review.
  • Coordinate PE review dates in the daily huddle and keep every review milestone on the schedule.
  • Support your designers as the project requires, including drafting yourself when that is what gets it done.
  • Keep the mechanical/plumbing and electrical schedules aligned so both disciplines finish together.
Coordination and Oversight
  • Oversee coordination between designers and vendors, from first contact through documentation.
  • Hold the team to the internal checklists. Sets do not reach the PE without them.
  • Coordinate with outside disciplines, including architect, civil, and structural, and handle CAD and Revit disclosure forms when models are requested.
  • Verify applicable building codes and local amendments, track code change dates against the submittal window, and contact plan reviewers when a requirement needs clarifying.
  • Resolve Comcheck and energy compliance discrepancies with the city.
  • Plan site visits: dates, contacts, roof and electrical room access, and marked-up backgrounds for whoever goes out.
  • Send progress and final deliverables to the client with the narratives, comment responses, and project close-out complete.
Construction Support and Documentation
  • Review submittals within 3 to 5 business days.
  • Answer RFIs within 24 to 48 hours.
  • Delegate submittal and RFI reviews to experienced designers when you are confident in their work, then review before it…
