Position: CAAS Controller - Nonprofit (In Office)

Job Overview

CLA is seeking a Controller with experience in the nonprofit industry to join our CAAS (Client Accounting & Advisory Services) practice based in Albuquerque, NM. The role involves working independently at client locations, supervising engagement teams, and delivering timely financial statements to client leadership.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain internal control policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate financial planning, budgeting, and procurement activities.
  • Prepare financial statements, business activity reports, and regulatory agency reports.
  • Evaluate procurement needs and recommend investment options.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and ratios.
  • Assess performance of accounting and financial staff and implement improvement actions.
  • Advise management on short‑term and long‑term financial objectives, policies, and actions.
  • Communicate regularly with boards, bankers, investors, and constituents; host board presentations as needed.
Education & Experience
  • Required:

    Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field. CPA certification preferred.
  • Required:

    Six years of relevant accounting and/or financial experience, with nonprofit industry experience highly preferred.
  • Required:

    Strong proficiency with accounting software;
    Quick Books experience preferred.
  • Required:

    Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and other applicable software.
  • Travel:
    Occasional local travel to client sites; occasional non‑local or overnight travel for client visits, training, meetings, and other business purposes.
Skills & Knowledge
  • Solid understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (FASB/SFAS).
  • Strong organization and goal orientation.
  • Ability to handle pressure and maintain a positive professional manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and value diverse contributions.
  • Proven success in managing client relationships to exceed expectations.
