Job Description
The Tax Manager, Core Tax Services is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. The Manager applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizes and communicates potential risks and changes in tax policy, and may provide written tax advice to clients.
In addition, the Manager is involved in marketing, networking, and business development within an area of expertise and specialization.
- Ensure both client compliance with all applicable authorities and minimization of their tax and reporting burdens, while also ensuring compliance with firm policies and standards.
- Conduct top‑level reviews of tax returns, resolving all issues with the client and involving specialists as appropriate.
- Communicate with client and Assurance any issues identified in tax accrual reviews.
- Plan and review the tax process and procedures, including budgeting, staffing, monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred, timely billing, management of out‑of‑scope activity, and timely collection of accounts receivable.
- Manage client relationships and expectations in accordance with the project and provide timely advice to clients.
- Identify when research is needed, clearly frame issues to be researched, and report analysis concisely.
- Apply firm and professional standards for preparation of WTA and tax returns, involving firm specialists as appropriate.
- Proactively apply firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48.
- Explain and discuss components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions to clients, and address any related complexities.
- Communicate with Assurance counterparts to plan tax accrual reviews, including budget, scope, and delivery dates.
- Utilize and manage STS as needed.
- Assist with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by reducing current and future taxes.
- Consider applicability of CTS and STS consulting specialties for each client.
- Develop and implement a work plan to organize the STS assistance on ongoing client projects.
- Serve as a technical resource and ensure client service teams comply with firm policy regarding WTA.
- Provide assistance with exam support and frame projects for effective delegation to seniors and associates.
- Develop an in‑depth understanding of technical and practical issues in at least one area of taxation (individual, corporate, property, sales, state/local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits).
- May be required to organize and conduct internal CPE training sessions in the area of specialization.
- Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to improve positions of clients, the firm, or firm personnel.
- Review studies of tax implications and offer alternative courses of action.
- Identify and leverage lessons learned on prior projects, and provide input on process and method improvement.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Supervise associates and senior associates on all projects and review their work, providing review comments.
- Train associates and seniors on use of current software tools and act as a career advisor.
- Schedule and manage workload of associates and senior associates, providing verbal and written performance feedback.
- Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
Skills and Abilities
- Five or more years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
