About the RoleThe Project Finance Specialist – Construction is responsible for the financial planning, monitoring, and reporting of construction projects from preconstruction through closeout. This role partners closely with project managers, estimators, project controls, and accounting to ensure projects are financially sound, properly funded, and delivered within approved budgets and cash flow targets.
Essential Functions- Support preconstruction financial planning, including cost estimates, project budgets, and cash flow projections
- Assist with financial feasibility analyses, pro formas, and return metrics for construction projects
- Review bid packages, subcontractor pricing, and assumptions for financial accuracy
- Develop baseline budgets aligned with contracts, schedules, and scopes of work
- Maintain and update project budgets, forecasts, and cost-to-complete (CTC) estimates
- Track project costs, commitments, change orders, and contingencies
- Analyze cost variances, productivity trends, and financial risks
- Partner with project managers to identify corrective actions for budget or margin impacts
- Develop and manage construction cash flow forecasts and funding requirements
- Support progress billing, pay applications, retainage, and revenue recognition
- Monitor owner payments, subcontractor payments, and working capital impacts
- Coordinate with lenders, owners, or internal finance teams on draw schedules and funding milestones
- Evaluate the financial impact of change orders, claims, and potential scope changes
- Track approved and pending changes and their effect on project margins and cash flow
- Identify financial risks related to schedule delays, cost escalation, or subcontractor performance
- Prepare monthly project financial reports, including budget vs. actuals, forecasts, and cash flow
- Provide financial insights to project executives, operations leadership, and finance teams
- Support internal and external audits, lender reviews, and project closeout documentation
- Maintain accurate financial data within project management and ERP systems
- Ensure compliance with contract terms, company policies, and internal financial controls
- Support continuous improvement of construction financial processes and reporting tools
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Construction Management, or related field
- 3–7+ years of experience in construction finance, project controls, or cost management
- Experience with large commercial, industrial, or infrastructure construction projects preferred
- Strong proficiency in Excel and construction financial reporting tools
- Experience with ERP and project systems (e.g., Procore, CMiC, Viewpoint, SAP, Oracle)
- Working knowledge of construction contracts, billing methods, and revenue recognition
- Understanding of cost codes, WBS, and project scheduling integration
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
- Ability to collaborate with project managers, superintendents, and executives
- Detail‑oriented with the ability to manage multiple active projects
- Clear communicator capable of translating financial data into operational insights
- Experience in CMiC (ERP) and PowerBI
The anticipated salary for this position is budgeted at $140,000 - $180,000 a year
