This position will be located at our Corporate Office.
The Commercial Loan Underwriter IV is responsible for underwriting and managing the department's most complex loans and relationships. The role provides mentorship and coaching to junior underwriters by providing development opportunities, feedback, training, and guidance, as appropriate.
The Commercial Loan Underwriter IV also provides direct support to all commercial lending teams in the Credit Union and assists with monitoring and servicing credit relationships, including all commercial loan types and products.
Essential Functions
- Works directly with lenders under little supervision to underwrite credit requests as assigned.
- Oversees the periodic loan review process to ensure all loans are reviewed appropriately and timely.
- Reviews and approves loans within delegated authority and provides recommendations on credit requests that exceed individual lending authority.
- Provides mentoring, training, advising, and assistance to junior underwriters during the underwriting process, including new and modification loan requests and periodic loan reviews.
- Ensures compliance standards are met and maintained for the entire commercial loan portfolio.
- Assists in the workflow management of the Commercial Loan Underwriting Team and provides efficiency recommendations.
- Promotes partnership and relationship-building with business partners within the organization.
- Assists management in communicating and administering policies, procedures, and practices.
- Acts as control point in the loan approval process to ensure adherence to Credit Union procedures, credit policies, and loan covenants.
- Monitors the existing commercial loan portfolio and provides collection efforts on delinquent accounts.
- Supports audits and credit examinations of the commercial loan portfolio.
- Responsible for monitoring loan portfolios as assigned, including periodic reviews, determining risk ratings, ensuring compliance with loan covenants, and completing underwriting tasks for modifications and extensions of loan terms.
- Identifies, gathers, and analyzes information to assess credit risk, establish viability of sources of repayment, and determine appropriate loan structures. Reviews leases, rent rolls, construction contracts, appraisals, environmental assessment reports, Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) searches, flood determinations, insurance policies, and other information to assess risks associated with the Credit Union's collateral position.
- Reviews and analyzes the creditworthiness of all commercial loan originations, prepares written credit memorandums for presentation and approval, loan covenant monitoring, risk rating, stress testing, and audit preparation.
- Participates in presentations to Member Business Loan Committee (MBLC) and the Executive Lending Committee.
- Facilitates and attends sales calls and visits for select-sized loans.
- Assists in the oversight of the workout loan portfolio and completes quarterly monitoring reports.
- Oversees underwriting and decisioning of small business and business credit card loans processed by underwriters.
- Partners with business banking officers to obtain all necessary financial and other documentation to underwrite a loan and move it through the approval process. Ensures all loan requirements have been met prior to loan closing.
- Provides post-funding analytical and monitoring support of credit relationships and portfolio maintenance.
What You Bring

- Bachelor's Degree Required
- 8 to 10 years of similar or related experience. in commercial lending required...
- Small Business Administration (SBA) Underwriting experience preferred.
- Proven ability in commercial lending, including lines of credit, term loans, and commercial real estate lending.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge and experience with office suite software (e.g., Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Strong attention-to-detail, organization, and multitasking skills
