Position: PART-TIME STATE TROOPER

Overview

Patrols highways and enforces the laws of the state to protect life and property. Limited to part‑time Highway Patrol‑related duties and responsibilities. May be assigned to specialized Highway Patrol functions including motorcycle patrol, collision and criminal investigations, paramedic duties, community relations, or administration. Performs related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct part‑time highway patrol duties and enforce traffic and criminal laws, including arrests, use of force when necessary, and transporting offenders to jail.
  • Respond to emergencies, collisions, and public safety incidents, stabilize scenes, provide first aid, and ensure the safety of all involved.
  • Investigate crimes and traffic collisions by gathering evidence, conducting interviews, writing reports, and preparing cases for court testimony.
  • Engage in continuous training and professional development, remain aware of criminal activity, and operate and maintain law‑enforcement equipment and vehicles.
  • Collaborate with the public, other agencies, and community partners through problem‑solving efforts, interagency coordination, and promoting cooperative law‑enforcement practices.
  • Maintain Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) General Instructor Certification and any AZPOST specialty instructor certifications held at the time of, or obtained during, employment in this classification.
  • Achieve and/or maintain at least one instructor certification and rating, including, but not limited to, Firearms Instructor, Driving Instructor, Drug Recognition Expert Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, etc.
  • Complete specialty training as assigned, including, but not limited to, Unmanned Aerial Systems Operator, Terrorism Liaison Officer, Phlebotomy, etc.
  • Knowledge of
    • police methods, practices, and procedures.
    • departmental rules and regulations.
    • federal, state, and local laws governing traffic and crime, search and seizure activities, and the rules of evidence.

    Skill in
    • operation of a vehicle under normal and/or adverse conditions.

  • Qualifications

    Requires current AZ POST certification as a regular peace officer and a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in a sworn classification employed continuously at the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Must have successfully completed the State Trooper Academy and the Department’s Field Training Program and probationary period. Must have achieved a satisfactory or above overall rating on the most recent evaluation.

    Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver license at the time of and throughout employment. Must be an AZPOST Certified General Instructor.

    Other Requirements

    Part‑time State Troopers shall not be considered on‑call. Part‑time State Troopers shall achieve and maintain specialty training, certifications, or instructor certifications as assigned. Department of Public Safety sworn personnel are stationed throughout Arizona, with some individuals living in Utah, California, Nevada, and Colorado. Part‑time State Troopers may be assigned to any of these locations.
