Position: Fuel Tax Officer - ECD Full Authority Lateral Officer

This position focuses on public safety by protecting life, property and the state transportation infrastructure, by providing safe and efficient movement of commercial traffic through the State of Arizona. The Fuel Tax Unit is responsible for sampling/analyzing fuel sources during roadside enforcement on vehicles of interest and when conducting unannounced inspections to identify fuel tax fraud. Enforces all state and federal laws and regulations relative to commercial vehicle enforcement and regulatory compliance.

Background check and in and out-of-state travel is required.
* This position is eligible for a $4,000 hiring incentive.

Retirement

Mandatory participation in the Arizona Retirement System (ASRS) is required.

Knowledge of:
  • Pertinent State and Federal motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations
  • Sampling/analyzing fuel sources on vehicles during inspections at construction sites, ranches, farms, other agricultural business locations, and motor fuel stations
  • Modern law enforcement methods, best practices and procedures
  • Search and Seizure, rules of evidence and custody of prisoners
  • Defensive tactics
  • First Aid, CPR
  • Court systems, procedures and protocols
  • Activity reporting and accounting procedures established for the work system
  • Principles of report writing
  • Knowledge of and ability of having previously served as a certified peace officer in Arizona; another state, or federal agency, and meet all of the minimum qualifications for certification as an Arizona Peace Officer
Skills in:
  • Interpreting relevant State and Federal motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations
  • Fuel Tax Evasion Unit and provide education and outreach to individuals and businesses within the related industries
  • Eliciting factual information and drawing valid conclusions
  • Use and care of firearms
  • Operate police equipment in emergency situations
  • Exercise discretion in use of force
  • Verbal and written communication
  • Problem solving and using good judgment
  • Google Workspace
  • Completed the basic and advanced training that demonstrates substantial comparability to the Arizona basic Course
Ability to:
  • Prepare clear and concise reports
  • Establish and maintaining effective relationships with staff members and the general public
  • Maintain moral standards and integrity
  • Work as a team and collaborate
  • Make effective and reasonable decisions under pressure
  • Operate law enforcement computers, software and database programs

Selective Preference(s)

Knowledge of Motor Vehicle Laws, rules and regulations; computer skills, report writing. 1 year of law enforcement experience.
