About the Responsibilities

As a Safety Specialist, you will develop, implement, and support programs and practices to prevent occupational injuries and illnesses. You will audit a variety of CAP facilities to assist in this process. You will provide training and instruction to CAP employees, and occasionally to contractors, on a wide range of safety and health topics. You will assist in maintaining various pieces of safety and health‑related equipment.

You will also conduct industrial hygiene monitoring as needed and under the direction of CAP’s senior industrial hygienist.

Some of the responsibilities include:

  • Conduct inspections of work areas for compliance with safety standards, codes, and practices. Work collaboratively with managers, supervisors, and employees to address opportunities for improvement. Conduct follow‑up inspections as needed. Report inspection findings to the EH&S manager. Investigate safety‑related incidents, including those that result in near‑misses, and report findings to the EH&S manager.
  • Assists with the safety oversight of contractors performing work throughout the CAP system. Reviews and makes recommendations regarding contractor safety procedures, and their job hazard analysis. Attends meetings with contractors as needed.
  • Provides training to CAP employees on a wide range of occupational safety and health topics throughout the year, including at CAP’s annual Safety Week. Provides training to remote crews. Works with crews to facilitate emergency response drills of various types. Assists in maintaining training equipment, including CAP’s confined space training trailer.

About

the Qualifications

Successful candidates will have a High School diploma or GED with four (4) or more years of professional experience in the application of occupational safety and health practices; OR an Associate’s degree (or higher) in occupational safety and health or related field (i.e., industrial hygiene) plus two (2) or more years of professional experience. Must be able to demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.

Must also be able to establish effective working relationships with a wide variety of individuals and groups. Training or experience in basic construction, equipment operations, water utility operations and/or safety code application is preferred but not required. A valid driver’s license and being able to maintain a good driving record is required. This is a safety‑sensitive position, and functional pre‑employment testing is required.

Unless already completed, must successfully complete the OSHA 30‑hour, Fall Protection, Confined Space Entry, and Electrical Safety training courses within 18 months of hire. Some overnight travel is required.
