Athletic Trainer (3)

Under the supervision of the Principal, Vice Principal and Athletic Director, athletic trainers provide management and care of injuries to students with the direction of a licensed physician. They provide prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of emergent, acute, or chronic injuries and medical conditions, including mechanical stimulation, heat, cold, light, air, water, electricity, sound, massage, and use of therapeutic exercises, reconditioning exercise and fitness programs.

They perform other job‑related duties as required or assigned in accordance with all applicable policies of the Diocese of Phoenix.

Specific Areas of Responsibility
  • Provides athletic training services to student‑athletes in accordance with the Arizona athletic training practice act.
  • Participates in continuing education sufficient to maintain the professional state license and national certification.
  • Maintains appropriate general treatment orders to be reviewed annually.
  • Provides medical and athletic training services in coordination with any other campus athletic trainer(s) for home athletic contests and away state playoff games as feasible; if a conflict arises between an away varsity state playoff game and a home varsity contest, the home event will supersede.
  • Attends and supervises, as feasible, the practices of sanctioned school sports teams to provide medical and athletic training services in coordination with other athletic trainer(s).
  • Works closely with the volunteer team physician; the AT should consult with the team physician on specific injury cases, refer athletes to the team physician as indicated and follow the team physician’s advice on individual injury management.
  • Develops and implements comprehensive Emergency Action Plans (EAP) for all venues and sports.
  • Administers baseline concussion screenings and assessments for athletes in contact sports and interprets the results of these tests in conjunction with concussion care and return‑to‑play decisions.
  • Acts as medical liaison between family physicians and specialists, the athletics office, Diocese of Phoenix, athletes and their parents.
  • Maintains accurate records of athlete care.
  • Develops and maintains a budget for the athletic training supplies and equipment.
  • Advises on the selection, fit, function and maintenance of protective athletic equipment.
  • Provides the coaches with information regarding ability to play and/or practice modifications to ensure athlete’s safe return to play.
  • Counsels and educates athletes and coaches on injury management, nutrition, substance abuse, fitness, conditioning, or other topics related to athletic training.
  • Meets with parents prior to the season to explain health and safety policies, procedures and requirements.
  • Communicates with athletes’ parents regarding injury status and recommendations for treatment and referral.
  • Assists the athletic director as requested in the overall management of everything health and safety related.
  • Works in cooperation with the other athletic trainers of the high school and performs related administrative duties and work as required by the Athletic Director and/or Head AT.
  • Interacts and communicates both verbally and in writing with all levels of staff, physicians, patients and families in an effective manner exhibiting tact, enthusiasm and patience.

  • Emergency cardiac care certification for healthcare provider.
