Position Summary

The Sterile Processing & Distribution (SPD) Certified Technician provides a variety of technical functions in the decontamination and sterilization of surgical instruments and other medical supplies in compliance with policies and procedures of Perioperative Services, AORN, JCAHO, OSHA, and AAMI standards. The SPD Certified Technician must have a working knowledge of decontamination, instrumentation, and sterilization, as well as a national certification as noted in the job qualifications.

Position

Duties
  • Assure decontamination of instrumentation is in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and AAMI standards.
    • Receive soiled case carts/bins and instruments into the decontamination area.
    • Prioritize instruments needed for turnaround.
    • Hand wash/pre-soak instruments in an enzymatic solution.
    • Change chemicals for washers when indicated, ensuring proper chemicals are used.
    • Maintain records for sterilization.
  • Act as a liaison between the Operating Room and Sterile Processing to communicate changes and needs for subsequent cases.
    • Check operating room needs regularly.
    • Check case carts/bins for needed items.
    • Return unused items to the Sterile Processing Department.
    • Assist in assembling case carts.
    • Assist in maintaining supplies in O.R.’s and clean core (Main O.R. duty).
  • Maintain effective communication to ensure appropriate instrumentation is available for surgery.
    • Assemble instruments in order of importance.
    • Inspect all instruments for damage.
    • Assemble and test instrumentation to ensure it is working properly.
    • Determine when repair/replacement is needed.
    • Wrap instruments/sets appropriately.
    • Use count sheets for proper sorting of instrumentation and equipment to provide efficient procedures.
    • Use 'Assembly Books' for proper peel packing of instrumentation for clinics/departments.
  • Sterilize instruments and equipment according to manufacturers IFU's and AAMI standards.
    • Perform all daily tests and record results.
    • Prepare label gun with correct date and identification number and stamp each item to be sterilized.
    • Use instrument tracking system for proper documentation.
    • Place sterilized items onto the appropriate storage shelf.
  • Assemble case carts accurately and indicate missing items in the pick list.
  • Perform miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
Position Qualifications Education
  • High School Diploma or GED – Required.
  • Completion of an accredited CS/SPD Technician course – Required.
Experience
  • 3 years of experience in a central sterile department or surgical instrument room – Preferred.
Special Skills
  • Basic working knowledge of computers – Required.
  • Able to comprehend written and verbal instructions – Required.
Additional Requirements
  • National certification as CSPD Technician from CBSPD or certification as a CRCST from IAHCSMM – Required.
